There were two lawsuites in the 1970s against his family's real estate company (while Trump was president) for alleged racial discrimination against black people by quoting different rents for black people and falsely telling black applicants that rooms were not available. Trump obviously denied but eventually settled (without admitting wrong doing), promised to behave in the future, only for there to be another lawsuit a few years later
He casino was also fined in the early 1990s for removing black dealers at clients' request in his casino
A book from around the same time also quoted him using racist language about his black employees (which granted was written by a former employee, so may or may not have been from a disgruntled former employee - I really don't know)
And even discounting all of that, it was also his comment in the campaign that lead to accusations of racism, not the Democrats; just two examples are that he implied a judge couldn't do his job as he was Mexican and unbelievably he didn't condemn the KKK.
That is not to say he is a racist of course, and although IMO this does at least points towards it, I also don't know whether anything he said during the campaign is actually what he believes as he just seemed to say anything to get a reaction.
@jerryr I afraid I also disagree this is any sort of triumph for the so called 'silent majority' and the numbers show this; in terms of the overall number of votes he got less than Clinton. A large proportion of votes would also be from people who vote Republican regardless and his main opponent was someone who wouldn't exactly be a credible candidate in normal circumstances, so I don't know how much we can take from that, although undeniably there have been two significant victories for the right (if you include Brexit as right), but we'll see what happens when the centre-to-left can produce a credible candidate (both in the UK and US)Last edited by sheppsea; 11-11-2016, 12:42 AM.

Originally posted by jerryr View PostI think that like Brexit, the vote for Trump shows that the liberal left politics of appeasement and ignoring the silent majority had come to an end. Let's wait and see what happens in France and Germany next year. Their elections could signify a shift to the right that would, in my opinion, be much scarier than Trump or Britex. Never underestimate the great unwashed, there is only so much shit you can dump on them before they start throwing it back.

Anyone who says Trump didnt condemn the KKK is mis informed or just plain wrong.
The woman who organised the march in London made the same claim today on the Radio 2 Jeremy Vine show.
Jeremy Vine confirmed categorically that Trump did infact denounce them and confirmed the BBC has it as record.
Edit: and Vine clearly does not like Trump, so has no reason to blow smoke in that direction.Licky Licky before Sticky Sticky. - Puff Scotty 22/03/14

If he subsequently has condemned them then I stand corrected, but it ridiculous for him to claim he doesn't know anything about 'these groups' and in my opinion is clearly avoiding the issue. Again, not definitive proof of being a racist, but its another thing that suggests he may be, or at least that he was trying to get support from these groups. At best he is doing exactly what all politicians do with difficult questions and not answering it, which pours cold water on any idea he is the some new 'hope' who will change politics

Most think trump was slow to denounce Duke and the KKK because he knew they were part of his base and he didn't want to drive them away.

I agree on the point he isnt a new hope. I think western politics is a little too institutionalized for that right now.... And thats why I'm not overly worried, yet.Licky Licky before Sticky Sticky. - Puff Scotty 22/03/14

Originally posted by sheppsea View PostI'm certainly not worried either, but I certainly am not a fan of Trump or his rhetoric
