• Manual vs Automatic

I caught a snip of a conversation today, 'I just don't understand why every car isn't automatic...'

Out of curiosity who here has which & does anyone think along the same lines? I bet there's some who've only driven one or other... like me until a couple of years ago.

poll up if you want to participate 😊

I have a manual and in my 25 years of driving I've only ever had manuals and have never driven an automatic.

I drive manuals, my wife automatic; I drive her car when we are out together. I did have an automatic Nissan Micra for yrs, which I only bought because it was a great price at the time. Bit easier in very heavy traffic i.e. tailbacks around Antwerp & M25 but otherwise better control, fuel efficiency & brake wear on a manual - I believe anyway.

I had a courtesy car that was automatic recently after 25 years of driving manuals. They said to "drive it like a go kart, a stop a go pedal... easy!" with one foot on each pedal I kangarood onto the highway. A couple of accidental emergency stops later I decided that I was obviously getting something wrong and rested my left foot completely. Using only my right. Then it was easy and over a few days I got to quite like it. It is a bit weird not changing gear and not using your left foot. I was glad to get my manual back but would consider an automatic. Especially if it was a big car like a jaguar or something. Our current cars are an Mg TF and a skoda rapid. I think they are both better in manual.

Manual for me. The Mrs Merc is an auto and I drive it a lot but would chose a manual given an opportunity. I haven't driven anything DSG etc yet though which may be a different story.

Hmm DSG that sounds technical [emoji6] maybe the poll should've had a third option!

I'm in agreement with TonyN and cigarmo on this, switched & love it, it's a DSG & I haven't driven a traditional auto.

The Moose family have a manual and an automatic. I actually like them both. The manual is a dinky Citroen C1 and is surprisingly good fun. The automatic is a Seat Leon which is a DSG (two clutches, joined by not always correct computer), also good fun, but different.

Incidentally, I read that ideally you're supposed to drive an automatic with two feet, as with practice you end up with quicker responses. The theory is that you can't disengage an automatic through a clutch pedal, so may need to brake more quickly. Of course that could be rubbish, but I guess so long as you're safe.

Mine is manual and the wifes is auto. Cant beat using hers when I have a long journey. First auto I've really driven and loved it so much I've ordered my new car with auto.

Both have the steering column paddles so can still shift up or down if needed.

IMO Automatic is a driving aid for people who: dont want to/cant/get no enjoyment out of driving or spend 99% of their driving life in slow stop start traffic and find it tedious.

Manual is the only way to drive if you care at all about having any input and proper control of the machine.
