Incidentally, I read that ideally you're supposed to drive an automatic with two feet, as with practice you end up with quicker responses. The theory is that you can't disengage an automatic through a clutch pedal, so may need to brake more quickly. Of course that could be rubbish, but I guess so long as you're safe.

I drive both, my cars have always been manual gearboxes, whereas at work it's all automatic which is handy..So, I can't really vote as there's no option for both.
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment as you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!

Had many manuals and many automatics. Enjoyed the manual box in the more performant cars I've owned. Hated the same manual box when I've had to negotiate hours of stop-start commuting traffic though. The automatics I've had have had triptronic / flappy paddles so if I've wanted to flip to manual I can but generally the automatic boxes have been great especially the newer 8 speed boxes.

My Mercedes is an auto (big lazy V8), the runaround we have is also an auto as it is a Nissan Leaf. But we also have a manual camper van and my Boxster race car is a manual. So we are definitely 50/50 at the moment.

As a retired police advanced driver I can assure you that's b*ll*cks. You're more likely to have an accident trying to use both feet at once. The only exception before someone else mentions it is highly skilled rally drivers using the heel/toe method.

I've been driving auto for years, out of choice wouldn't back. Current car has "flappy paddles" only used them to play with once or twice other than that I leave it in standard auto.

DSG is VW's version of auto, has a duel clutch so none of the jerkiness you sometimes get with auto's. It is very smooth and joy to drive.

Fair and well noted from someone who knows and lived what they're talking about, I simply wanted to to cite that I hadn't imagined it!

I do hope I haven't inflamed any sensibilities. Never my intention.

I do believe F1 drivers use left foot braking technique

I drove and chose nothing but manuals for over 30 years, including my V8 Discovery which I used on regular long runs when an automatic would have been more sensible. I always shunned automatics as being less control etc but for the last 5 years I've had an automatic Jaguar and, like others, I wouldn't go back now. That said, I borrow my son's little Fiesta occasionally and sling it around bends on country roads in a way we all like to do and which you can only do in a manual! Horses for courses as they say...

Always had manual cars but i do like driving an auto and would consider having one permanently.

I'm pondering a similar consept to the DSG on my next motorbike making the bike semi-automatic, Honda call it DCT (dual clutch transmision)gives very smooth gear changes👍👍

until most recent cars we were all manual... now all auto.

we're into 4x4's these days... both have flappy paddles and we tend to ignore them .... in days of smaller, faster, more fun cars we would defo stick to manual - much more fun for the driver
