  • Purging your lighter

    Hi All

So what do you all use to purge lighters?

I have been using a match hoping that it wont damage the filling nozzle as the wood is on the softer side. Is there something else I should rather be using?

I know that Xikar has a tool. Is that the thing to use?

Hi Mike72. Any small metal-tipped object will do. Personally, I keep a small jeweler flat blade screw driver around which does the deed nicely. After purging, I like to used compressed air to clean the jets.

I've never purged a lighter personally and haven't had any issues of real note (I don't think)

I clean the jet/nozzle occasionally by firing some butane in there, using the can I used to fill it up with. Simply press the bugger against the jets. As they say though, YMMV and Be careful to allow the fluid to fully evaporate before reusing it

Interesting, CJ121...perhaps that's why you have such a large collection. (LOL)

As I understand it, the idea behind purging is to remove excess air that has built up over multiple fill-ups. Also, when purging, it is important to remember to hold the lighter upside down (filler nipple up) to remove air.

Now, I'm just spit-balling here... but too much air in the tank likely impacts performance and decreases the time between refills.

And they all work as good as each other when I remember to fill the buggers up. (SOTQ)

Never heard of this either so gave it a go. I either had a huge air bubble in mine.......... or I've just let all the gas out!

I seem to remember reading somewhere, upside down to fill and right way up to purge. This is how I have been doing it.

Hell, you can purge it sideways, for all I care, but elementary physics dictates holding the lighter upside down to get rid of air and right side up to get rid of bad butane.

But don't take it from me, chico...listen to what this young gun has to say:

                        CJ121...Johnny Thunder,

I want to apologize to both of you for the rude responses you received. It may be hard to believe, but it wasn't me!!! I supect it was Ray Jay Coro channeling his rough & tumble style through my posts. I've noticed this happening more and more as my time here grows short.

So again, I apologize for the nasty responses you received from this account. You are both fine and upstanding gentlemen and an asset to this fine forum. I only hope you can forgive me...(although I didn't really write the posts).
                        DAMN YOU RAY JAY!

Hey RB, that's very kind. Please don't put yourself through a self imposed purgatory though
