  • Smoking Cigars Outdoors in Public

    So then folks,

As a relatively new cigar lover I've mostly been doing my smoking either in my garden at home or maybe down by the beach on a sunny day however I would quite like to have a cigar in a beer garden or outside a coffee shop when I'm out and about however I'm not really sure what the etiquette is here.

How do you all find peoples reactions to you smoking cigars in public smoking areas?

    Good question, Harvey Spectre!

As a new cigar smoker myself, I have just recently started coming down off the hacienda ridge top to mingle with the flatlanders and enjoy a fine cigar. Now, whenever I do this, I try to keep a low profile and not draw attention to myself. When you stick a cigar in you face, you draw attention to yourself - good and bad...mostly bad.

So when I visit a place that allows outdoor smoking, I try to place myself downwind from others and as far away as I can. When this isn't possible, I'll often ask those around me if they mind if I light up. In most cases, they are okay with it, but occasionally, they say they mind. In those cases, I respect their wishes and wait until they leave to light up.

        Thanks for the swift replies.

I know its just about courtesy really as I don't want to inflict my smells (or should that be waste my luxury) on others but as cigarette smokers don't really seem to mind when the light up and (worse in my opinion) vape smoke seems to be everywhere I wondered if others had any different views on it?

Like RB I try to be downwind just to be accommodating. I'll also sit away from anyone even though it appears weird pulling s chair away but most people get it. I'm lucky that my local haunts have pipe/ cigar lovers so it's a common sight. I stay away from cig smokers though cause it spoils my smoke which might seem [emoji52][emoji849] to some. Cigars are 'me time' so I tend to mostly avoid anyone [emoji41]

...They're probably drinking whiskey and smoking big cigars...

I try to be considerate & not smoke near children or when people are eating, nothing is going to disturbyou more than muttering s or comments when you're trying to enjoy your moment in the zone. But when one of the party on the next table or even the table from them, are smoking a fag & then one of them complains about my cigar smoke! It's a smoking area, move on if you don't like it, go inside; we had to give up the dry & warmth to let you have it so use it!

Yep - agree with everything above. Be considerate of others, I suppose moreso than if you were just having a cigarette as you could be smoking for over an hour potentially.

That and I wouldn't draw too much attention to myself. I don't mind if friends etc have questions, but when people come up to you it can be a bit annoying (and distracting from your smoke!)

I often sit outside my local cafe or in a beer garden and enjoy a cigar, never had anyone pass a derogatory comment. In fact on several occasions lady's have said I love the smell of a cigar. The main thing to keep in mind is be considerate.

Compliments still outnumber complaints for me despite the obnoxious Germans on holiday

Each other? It would probably be more socially acceptable!

I thought you'd been warned before about smoking spliffs on the kiddies playground swings

                            Believe It Or Not!

Just a quick story from don TJ's journal.

Several years ago, while don TJ and the Coros were on a cruise, they were settling in to enjoy a drive-in like movie on the vast and open upper deck of the cruise ship. As don TJ began to light up a Cohiba siglo I, a woman from the other side of the deck complained to the crew. Don TJ politely agreed to move to the back. Soon after he light up, another woman complained that the smoke bothered her. Once again, the ship crew embarrassingly asked don TJ to move to an area next to the outdoor bar behind a red rope. So there he sat like a smoking monkey as people walked by and pointed.

The only good part of the story happened when a crew member walked by, apologized, and commented on how good the Cohiba Siglo I smelled.

                            True Story.

I find this thread so interesting... I don't by any means look for a confrontation and do when possible take steps to be sat independently and if with another person somewhere we don't exhale all over others.

But, as people have said, there is nowhere else to go for us smokers (of any leaf) now and I guess the summer months highlight that.

There are 3 places I like to go with a friend for a lunch and then we sit outside for a cigar. If it's throwing it down and gale force winds about, we Smoke at his. But otherwise it's nice to eat and mooch out for a smoke.

The looks are the worst and it does irritate me. Some people who look have a dog that walks into a restaurant? I love dogs and bars / pubs that host them, are splendid but a restaurant?! And the icing on the cake, children!! And their too busy looking at their phone to keep them under control parents... I can't see how that is any worse than my cigar smoke... And when I am sat in the only place I can sit to enjoy it? Where I sit all year round? See I get upset...

But as I said by no means do I look for a confrontation but I guess I do get rather defensive when challenged.

I have also had nice comments and inquisitive people along with drink hen parties asking for a "go"
