  • Matches verses lighter

Was having a puff this morning on my pipe and thought about an x gamekeeper I was talking to Saturday chopping logs and smoking his Peterson pipe
with some erinmore flake must say it smelt nice standing near him, while waiting for the go ahead from the gamekeeper to move on.
Been on the pipe 40 years he told me and never have used a lighter of any sort indoors or out and about.
He said today most if not all smokers have got these fancy torch lighters to light their cigars
and fancy low flame lighters to light up their pipes what a lot of rubbish whats wrong with the good oll humble match
which made me think would we be lost without our smoking gadgets even the tamper to tamp down the tobacco in our pipe
he was using his good old thumb to tamp down.
He wasen't putting us smokers down just saying there is no need for expensive gadgets to enjoy our hobby wether cigars or pipes.
Won't be long before matches be a thing of the past he said
What would you say to what he said above.

    Matches verses lighter

I use a match on the pipe & tamp with my thumb, although I've ordered an honest pipe lighter with tamp. In my opinion Matches will not be disappearing any time soon!

That said I have a fine collection of lighters and like a gadget as much as the next man.

Find it more traditional lighting a pipe with a match or two.

I'm not a pipe smoker but I've never been able to fully light a cigar with a match although that may be because I'm too quick to turn to the Z-Plus

Maybe think to properly light a cigar it takes 3 long matches.

The problem with matches is if that someone even farts in your general direction they blow out.

I wonder if a refillable lighter is more eco friendly than long term use of matches?

I prefer the smell of the match burning during the light, but for ease its a jet for me each time, i like to have it fully lit before a quick cut, purge and then puff

Petrol/chemical industries required to make the plastics the fuel, the other industry for metal parts versus matches with a renewable material and a little phosphorus... Matches looking like the better option environmentally to me.

Every now and again i love a cedar spill... Quite theatrical, it feels 'proper'. Same with nice long cedar matches, but for ease and reliability in all weathers its a jet for me too.

Im no eco warrior but in a match we have

Body: Ammonium phosphate and paraffin wax.
Head: Potassium chlorate with animal glue, amorphous phosphorus and colourants.
Packaging: Powdered glass, Phosphorous, Carbon and more glue. Along with the plastic wrapping, if not for each pack then for bundles of packs. Then theres the greater carbon footprint.

Im in no doubt that disposable plastic lighters are by far the worst. But refillable lighters and matches I dont know, must be a lot of wood for a world worth of match stock and the carbon footprint to get and process and ship that wood.
