    Taking The Piss

I got a letter from hmrc on it was pie chart showing tax expenditure. Welfare was the biggest slice followed closely by the nhs. That year I paid over ?10k income tax so around ?3.5k of that was on benefits (besides getting taxed on what's left every time I spend etc!) I've seen 1st hand the wasteful welfare system we've got. There's a lot of abuse of it.

I haven't checked the link as (with all due respect Tony) the financial/social issue/policy could be one of dozens, affecting thousands, whether it's in someone's 'favour' or further impacting upon their deprivation. However, it's the system not the individual that needs scrutinising as mentioned earlier.

Half of the total benefits bill is pensions now, and rising rapidly. Other benefits are peanuts in comparison.

So what should we do with those who can't find a job or need help? And don't tell me you can always find a job if you really want. That might be true right now, but it wouldn't be true if all unemployed would try to get a job.

So what is your solution, you that are so upset about some people exploiting the system? I only ever hear complaints, but no suggestions.

While I love to get upset about the world as much as the next person, it does get rather boring after a while.

Exploitation of the system ! Honestly doesn't everyone exploit, abuse or avoid some aspects of our governing system , trouble is we are all too eager to condemn whilst believing and convincing ourselves that our indiscretions are justified

                Taking The Piss

Mate it's a joke. I work Monday to Friday 6am to 6pm for a company subcontracting then Saturday and Sunday for my own company. Very rarely get a day off. I do this so my partner can stay home with our baby because child care costs a bomb. But yet we are entitled to 0 benefits to help out yet neither of us have ever been out of work and always paid tax. I work my bollocks off so people like this can be rewarded to have more kids. I would love to have another child in the next year or so but I can't because I simply can't afford it atm. Yet no reward for me for being sensible and actually saving the tax payer money. My missus would actually be better off if we split up. The benefits system is a joke but it does also help out those who really need it and so it should as that's what it's there for but it shouldn't be a way of life for those who are able to work. I think if you're able to work but can't find a job then you should have to volunteer to earn your benefits. Give something back to the community.

Sorry for the rant but it is frustrating sometimes.

I think volunteering where possible judged on a case by case basis is a good shout. It gives the claimant skills and contacts too thst could lead to a job.

I am also in the position that as a family we are worse off for working.

But TBH my experience of benefits is too stressful and I couldnt live like that. The only benefit we have ever received is child tax credits.

Last year they messed up and canceled them and proceeded to chase us for ?7k that we didnt even owe. It was eventually sorted out.

This year they are doing the same, but to the tune of ?2.5k. No doubt it's their mistake again.

My brother with Spina Bifida had all his canceled a few years back and they assessed him as not needing some of his benefits which in turn prompted then to chase him for 10's and 10's of thousands..... Yet again after lots of work chasing them, turns out it was their mess up again and his payments should have gone UP.... Not down at all.

Also for those lacking in confidence/motivation when it comes to work, volunteering could be the key to help them get back on their feet after constant knock backs from jobs. Not everyone is on the scrounge.

We can't stop people having children it's up to them at the end of the day they can have as many as salim
but the government shoulden't pay anything after the second child the way things are going.
See it every day young mums no older than 25 with 4 to 5 kids taking them to either school or play school
they are given brand new houses just built 2 years ago the size of house they are kiven deppends on the number of children they have
go into town and you see homeless blokes asking for money to buy a cup of coffee
what is this country coming to looks like we are going back to Victorian times.

Is this a Daily Mail forum?!

The age of Mums, how many kids they have, how much is paid towards rent is irrelevant.

If you want to have a moan about how much is paid towards benefits aim it towards the elderly who didn't bother to get private pensions and draw from their state pension.

They don't deserve our ire either, yet they receive far more in "benefits" than Salim or any single Mums.

This is one of those debates that tends to draw binary viewpoints. Those in favour of welfare cuts cite the extreme cases of people taking the p*ss. Those against cuts cite those who really do need support as a safety net.

The two are not mutually exclusive, therefore welfare can be reformed to get rid off/disincentivise the p*ss takers, while still supporting those who really need it. The debate should be on where to draw the balance between the two, and in my view the government are getting it about right.

Just playing devil's advocate but how do we know how many of those old folk have paid into the system. Some families have several generations that have never worked.
