The World Health Organisation is expected to announce that the cancer threat from bacon and other processed meats is on a par with that of smoking.

It's in the "likely to give humans cancer" along with asbestos.

Have they defined what levels of processed yet?

Yeah - I think the WHO is probably statistically carcinogenic! I'm big into processed meat, all kind and appreciate to a degree, the way of preserving gives credence too such claims! But, if I smoke, eat preserved red meat, drink booze and generally be unhealthy, I'm still more likely to get hit on the head and die from a coconut in Cuba!

Let's all go full Version Paleo to find out shoes are also bad for you! Only as bad as rusty nails!!

Remember when they said that that saccharin in diet drinks gave mice gave you cancer? Then when you translated the results from mice to men you had to drink about 10L of diet coke a day

I fully intend to continue to eat bacon in enclosed spaces, public bars and restaurants and in my place of work ( lord knows its the only thing that makes it bearable some days)!

From what I've read of this (which admittedly isn't anything more than reading a couple of articles) a lot of the headlines are nothing more than sensationalist nonsense - red meats have been announced as probably carcinogenic and processed as carcinogenic, I certainly haven't seen anything about the WHO putting eating red/processed meat on a par with smoking cigarettes (except add it to a list tobacco is also on) or anything suggesting that you will definitely die of bowel cancer if you eat processed meat

They have clearly said the risk to an individual is small but increases the more processed meat you eat

To be honest I think its the WHO's responsibility to highlight this as a possible risk and allow people to make an informed decision on the subject, I would object if they started talking about banning it or brining any other legislation in the same way as they have with tobacco, but from what I've seen they haven't done that, all they've done is add it to a list, which people will have forgotten about by the end of the week

I stopped paying attention to these sorts of things after I read an article a few years ago saying bottled water was a health risk. Water for god's sake!

Everything in moderation is my attitude; don't deprive myself of anything I fancy, but also don't want to have to buy all new clothes to accommodate a fluctuating waistline!

Not so very long ago i found a jar if simething claiming to be 'bacon jam'.... Sounded great, but at nearly ?6 a jar i thought i'd just buy more bacon.....

oh ... And properly smoked in a smoke hole of course...
