I've been reading this thread since its start , and I will only add one thought : fashions come and fashions go high end prices or middle /low end one fact is true when it comes to style you've either got it or you ain't , you can't buy it .

While I agree, I do think that if you buy quality timeless pieces that you will have a wardrobe that can give years of service.

Right... how do I start... Ummmm.... Smoking jackets?!
I hope this isn't considered hijacking but who has one, does it have a place in a gentleman's wardrobe?

Hi there, I have three - a maroon bespoke one made by GD Golding, a military tailor. A velvet housecoat style one in Navy made by Favourbrook (on their website) and a green one made by Pakeman Catto and Carter (again, on their website). My view is if you smoke cigars regularly then why not? I certainly get my money's worth out of mine!

I have a couple of jackets from Pakeman (they're a short stroll from one of my favoured pubs in Cirencester). High quality, traditional British tailoring. Only downside is that most of their normal suit/sports jackets are stocked in three-button as standard (but they're always happy to get one cut as a two-button jacket if requested).

Will have to stick my head in next week to look at their smoking jackets.

I got 95% of the way through an order and stopped... As soon as I chose what I really wanted, it got too expensive given the starting price and what their proposition was offering... I'm very very picky about my suits...

How are you gents set for winter? I was unusually procative this year and got a couple of winter coats about a month ago. One a nice warm parka coat for work, and the other a faux leather jacket with faux shearling collar (a bargain at only ?70 from ASOS).

I almost want it to get cold now so I can actually wear them! Sod's law that the one time I'm ahead of the game a bit, we have this mild weather!

I have a nice dark coat that is a single breasted cross between a pea jacket and a trench coat, made of wool. I have had it for years and it refuses to look anything but new so I'm enduring with it.

I also recently found my old blue duffel coat at my grandparents and other than the lining needing a little stitch it's also in good condition so that's getting sent somewhere for a bit of work and will be my go to until it dies. I can prove its old because it has a CD pocket on the inside! Lol

                          A gentlemans wardrobe.

One of the many reasons I love the winter is the great sartorial options it opens up. I love coats and jackets. So much more to work with than in the summer.

Currently hunting for a new tweed jacket though, as my usual one is designed for arctic storms, and is a little warm for most of the winter. Have found a lovely tweed by a company down in Chichester though, so hoping to get something knocked up in that once I've had a bit of money coming in from this season's shoots. I love this pattern, with a hint of lilac in there, currently seen on my flat-cap...

Sounds like a classic overcoat which is always good to have. I've had mine for about 4 years and no plans to replace it as the style of them doesn't really change.

I don't wear mine as often these days though as I'm personally preferring a more casual coat over my smart work dress.

Yes, I agree! I've been trying to improve my layering in recent years as love the looks that can be achieved. Plus it's practical when going from outside to inside and during the transitional periods where it can be cold first thing in the morning, but mild in the afternoon.

I tend to stick with a Barbour coat. Lovely and warm and goes well with any tweed jacket underneath. If I'm wearing a city suit in winter, then I switch to my navy blue Crombie coat.
