  • A gentlemans wardrobe.

I'm at the point in my life where I'm starting to ditch the most casual of my clothing and am effectively building a new and more elegant and gentelmanly wardrobe. Perhaps we could discuss aspects of being (or attempting to be) a fashionable male here.

Im finding it quite interesting thinking my way through building an efficient wardrobe where things work together and leave me with options. What are some things you guys think are staples every man should have in his wardrobe?

Things I currently have a are

Shoes: Black Beatle Boots, Oxblood Oxfords, Brown Double Monkstraps, Brown Wingtip Brogued Derby's.

Suits: Grey 2 Piece, Navy 3 Piece, Green Tweed 3 Piece, Light Grey lightly striped 2 Piece.

Tops: A handful of dress shirts in light colours, e.g. White, light blue etc, a couple plain white t-shirts, a couple striped polo shirts, green Henley, a couple of lumberjack shirts and a navy wool jumper.

Jackets: Black Corduroy, Denim, Brown Leather.

Trousers: A couple dark slim fit jeans, fawn chinos, black Moleskin.

Coats: Dark Grey Pea Coat, Light Grey Wool Car Coat, Dark Blue Duffel Coat.

Accessories: Numerous Ties and Pocket Squares, A couple pairs of brown gloves, a couple scarves, black socks and socks that match the colour of my suits.

I find that I have a lot of combinations here and can make a lot of different outfits from relatively few items. Though I do think a black suit would have been a better option than a second grey suit.

Things that I would consider staples that I don't have are Fawn Trench Coat, Black Oxfords, Chelsea Boots, Chukka Boots, Penny Loafers, Corduroy Trousers, Blue Blazer, Sport Jacket (As the Americans would call it.), Rain/Country Jacket such as a Barbour.

My pet hate is shirts with button down collars and heavily branded items with the manufacurers name in huge letters all over it.

I bet we have some really well dressed gents on here who can give some great tips about what to do and what not to do when trying to pull off a cohesive thought out and elegant look.

Liking your post Marc....I myself mainly wear buttondown collars....My wardrobe is heading in the same direction. My pet hate is trousers that are remotely baggy.

I can appreciate this... I believe there is a switch that is flicked when u reach 40s which causes a re-evaluation of where your life and look is going.

I think you have prity much covered it. I like a waxed jacket and a Harrington in fawn. Unbranded and muted is the way to go

I wear linen scarfs waistcoats as well as above. Although I still throw in brown retro trainers into a more classic look. Like gazelle

I don't know what I have agains button down collars. Lol

they really don't work for me though, so perhaps I'm biased....... What's the idea behind them? Is there a functional reason or is a a form thing?

Edit: I love knitted ties, but don't own any. I think a burgundy one is on the cards though!

Oxford shirts ie button down are classic. We're very popular in 90s thanks Ralph Lauren

They are making bit of a comeback

Eek, is this going to happen to me again in another decade's time then? I thought that was going to be when I buy a soft top sports car and join a rock band.

My style has always leaned towards mod style, and it nearly always has to be a button down collar for me.

                      A gentlemans wardrobe.

Clarks desert boots, black or very dark blue selvedge jeans, belts to match your shoe colours (inc some nice woven belts) a navy pea coat, white oxford shirt, casual Blazers in navy, grey and brown, a couple of smart polo shirts, a few nice thin jumpers to wear over shirts (possibly with a tie) can also go under a jacket.

I'm not a fan of black suits as, if you're pale skinned, they can wash you out too much; navy or charcoal is far more flattering.

A good sturdy pair of Winter boots is a must; I love Grenson but they're out of my price range, but Barbour make some nice boots.

Country Attire is a good website, a nice mix of standard country with some more modern pieces.

Selvedge jeans could be a good discussion. Can you reccomend and brands? I'm currently looking at Levi's higher range, though I have seen some brands online that look promising..... Including one called "Unbranded".

I really like Levis, especially their black label line.

I used to spend a fortune on Paul Smith Red Ear before realising it's not really worth it.

Levis aren't cheap but they're pretty much bomb proof and wash well.

I tend to keep an eye out for sales and pick my jeans up then, you can easily save ?30 a pair.

Unbranded are good, in fact they're on sale at Aspecto for ?40 at the moment.
