• Cigars and health

I'm not about to go on a puritan rant or anything... but just some anecdotal evidence I have experienced. Many of you will know that I was constantly ill starting in September last year and it endured for a number of months. Well I can report that not having touched a cigar for a number of months now I feel like a completely different person, nothing else has changed I.e diet or exercise.... if anything my life has become harder and more stressful due to other ongoing events.

But within weeks of staying off cigars my ailments cleared up and I just kept feeling better and better. I remember now how I physically felt before the hobby and it's in STARK contrast to what I allowed myself to accept as "normal" during the peak of the Hoby for me.

So in my case, smoking Cigars with any regularity has a massive and measured negative effect on my day to day wellbeing. I have had long periods like this away from alcohol with no noticeable difference, so unless I have a specific bad reaction to tobacco it's pretty compelling evidence to me that this hobby has a much much greater and more immediate impact on health than I ever considered .

Glad to hear you're on the mend!
personally I'm happy to enjoy a cigar once in a while, and seasonally. They last longer this way too!

Firstly and most importantly it's great that you are now feeling better and I can empathise as some years ago I had a similar experience with caffeine, hence why now I only drink decaffeinated coffee and feel all the better for doing so.
Secondly, and this is only my opinion, but I think that in any situation like this regarding one's health, the best and most sensible thing to do is exactly what you have done here, to listen to what your body is telling you and act accordingly.
I hope you continue to feel well and all the best to you too! [emoji106][emoji2]

It's good to hear you're feeling better in yourself Marc

Right, what are you doing with all your cigars? Only joking

It's an interesting one for sure. I wondered whether there was something psychosomatic going on there, but you're switched on so will have given this some serious thought. Perhaps whilst it's not the end of your cigar indulgement, it's a big nod to possibly meter things out to special occasions. You'll be getting some age on them too, if you keep them...back to paragraph two

out of curiosity VTG , at the " peak of your hobby " what would have been your smoking regime , monthly , weekly , daily , more than one daily ?

regards

Some sensible advice here (for a change?!) If this is what you feel your body is telling you Marc, then it pays to listen. I would also reiterate, it would be a shame to give up completely, when there are still birthdays, Christmas's, New Year's, your childrens wedding ect to look fwd too & mark in our special way. We must admit of course, though we love the forums, they do encourage us to constantly think of cigars & hearing someone else's great experience makes us want to reach for one of our own, perhaps far more frequently than we did before we came online, I know it's true for me. Perhaps going back to your natural rotation, maybe one a two a month will neither harm your overall health but still give you some great pleasurable moments to look fwd to & hopefully you'll appreciate them more too. The best smoke I have is the one first one after two weeks offshore!

Some good advice there Simon Bolivar. Logging on here definitely makes the mouth water and creates an appetite for cigars. Ive recently reached the stage where I think Im smoking too many in a week. I smoked 4 or 5 this week and I know that I really should cut that down considerably. Thanks for posting this VTG as it has helped me clarify this in my mind!

I have been off them too, though the pipes are starting to interest me again slightly.

Not big by anyone's standards, 2-3 times a week. Then on the odd occasion 3-5 in a session with Mo.

Edit: to clarify, that's an individual stick often a small or slender stick 2-3 times in a week. And the sessions with Mo were not at all a regular occurance but certainly pushed me beyond my limits at times. Lol

Cigars and health

I definitely know that I wouldn't enjoy or appreciate cigars as much if I was smoking them all the time. In my opinion they should always be kept as a moment of pleasure rather than become a habit.
