Did anyone else read 'The Third World War' by General Sir John Hackett in the early eighties. It was a fictional account of what would happen if the Soviets decided to invade the West. What was telling was that he summarised at the end by saying that the West faced more of a threat from the rise of Muslim Extremism. He was in charge of the British Army at the time, did anyone listen?
Probably not - people rarely listen to military top brass (usually using some excuse along the lines of "they would say that, they just want more funding"). Problem is, they are generally realists, and have a better grip of what's going on in the world than idealist politicians and diplomats.
