• slip road whinge?

Am I right in thinking that if someone is joining a carriageway from a slip road, the drivers on the main carriage way are not obliged to slow down/ get out of the way of the car joining the traffic? It's all on the car joining to merge... ? Seems to be that drivers joining from a slip road expect people to get out of their way...

guess this means middle age has struck!!

Yep, its quite straightforward, you give way to the right so the drivers on the main carriageway have right of way. Advanced drivers are taught to move over a lane in anticipation of some dipstick coming up the slip road.

In the UK I'm sure that the main carriageway has right of way, PeeJay will be able to confirm with better knowledge. In the Netherlands however the joining traffic has right of way, I worked over there for a while and had to learn quickly!

I say cars joining need to slow down, and give way. Although cars on the main normally change lanes to allow cars to join

thats what I thought folks... if you spot a turkey up front move out the way... good to know you are in the right, even when the other bloke doesnt know it or care.

had ten tons of abuse of someone who shot up the left and essentially attempted to side barge me... this morning at 6 ish... that lad needs some karmic balance.

Yes, carriage has right of way, it is up to the driver on the slip to get up to speed or slow down so that he can merge.

But as said above, if I am approaching a slip and I can see someone wanting to merge, I always move over if safe and practical to allow them to merge safely.

However, there is nothing more annoying than trying to join a carriageway and someone just sits next to you and refuses to let you merge. Especially when the outside lane is empty and they can easily move over. It is common sense to want to get out of the way and avoid any incidents/accidents.

empty road... accelerated along side... made a scene... wired wrong... wouldnt mind but I have a reasonably heavy right foot... and a ruddy great tank which is hard to miss.

I usually join at 70 or higher if someone looks like they may not give way.

All drivers should read the road ahead not six foot infront of them, and above all be courteous to other road users

The main carriageway has the right and it is up to the joining motorist to match speed and slip in..... But, we have some issues here in the UK. Many of the slip roads are NOT long enough and we have a lane 1 which is most often extremely congested with HGV's traveling front to back within inches of each other at 55mph and a Lane 2 Thats congested with the traffic that would like to be in lane 1 but can't stand to sit in between two lorries inches from them. More often than not Theres a lorry traveling at 55.6mph trying to overtake the ones traveling at 55mph who wants to jump back into lane 1 ASAP..... Problem being he's stopping people from doing the reasonable thing in moving to lane 2 in anticipation of cars joining.

This creates a situation where you either have people in fast cars hammering down the slip road cutting in front of everything in a tiny gap they saw and instantly coasting over to lane 3 and trying to overtake everything else.

or you have cars that are too slow or drivers who are too wary who end up running out of slip and causing a congested slip road where nobody has a cat in hells chance of getting up to speed for lane 1..... IMO this tends to be the most dangerous situation.

So my advice, where possible anticipate a slip road and move into lane 2..... It's safer all round.

yup... am with you every day and twice on sundays etc. i was checking I was in the technically in the right . I'm all about avoiding issues... which means attempting to anticipate/ expecting the potential stupidity of others at every turn.

Most definitely the way to go, if you can anticipate what is going to happen and do something about it, you will find your drives are more progressive and hassle free.

You will be fixing situations before they have time to develop, just don't expect any thanks from those who charge headlong into danger and wonder why they get involved in incidents.
