Get one of those units from a few pages back and you'd need some steel!

Cheers. It's been about 18 years since I last poured any base (built a 'shed' with medium density blocks) It was about 8x15 and the knowledge fades. Hardcore sub base is it James? And levelling off such an expanse? Do you level the formwork with something long enough(plus spirit of course)

I set the shutter up with a laser level , but I doubt you've got one of those mine cost me ?750, but you could level them round as you go , put wooden pegs in the ground and nail shutter at correct height best way to get the pegs straight is to use a string line and using a wrecking bar make a whole for the peg first. When you lay the concrete work along in strips tamping as you go with an ali tamp or very straight piece of timber always be careful when walking backwards that you don't drop the level of the concrete when moving your feet , If you do just push some forward again

Great info, thanks. When you say strips and walking back/taking care not to drop the level: is it like making little bays, with a timber to shut off, inside the form, as you go along/fill? Sorry to bug you mate.

Nope , when you fill it up with concrete , you have to tip the wheel barrows in so you can level as you go , so you work along in strips say a metre or so , this enables you to bend over the concrete and tamp the concrete as you go , which aids you twofold , one you know you've got enough concrete ie not too much or too little and two if you fill it up and then try levelling and tamping the far end will possibly started to go off so your tamping won't be consistent

Ah, I think I was on the right track but didn't explain well. I get the strips thing, and tamping as you go, but re the strip, is it just open faced concrete as you move along inside the form? If that makes sense?

Yes stand in the concrete with your wellies on and bend over and tamp as far as you can reach working back to your feet fill and repeat

Excellent heads up James, thanks a lot for bearing with me and sharing. You deserve a cigar and a drink

Mmm, wellies? I might do a 3x3 form and ask Mrs CJ to tamp it for a few hours using this method, and rapid setting concrete for a giggle!

Any bases I have done I have used the chute from the mixer. However they have been much smaller than above. Meaning I could level and tamp from outside the shuttering.

Never done a base anywhere as big as that

Looking impressive James. What are the panels made from, 4x2 and Tongue and groove?
