Smaller than a Vectra but a convertible able to do a one week / two week road trip? Luggage storage space will be your issue here. How much of a deciding factor is it?

    Two seater :
MX5 - classic, fun cabriolet which are inexpensive but not much luggage space and maybe a firm ride for long trips.
Z3 / Z4 - Classy, great v6 engines if you want the power but lacking in luggage space.
Audi TT - Solid motors with a 225BHP Quattro available (limited bood space) or TDi with newest model
Honda Z2000 - Great VTec engine fun, ride can be firm, limited boot space
Mercedes SLK - Solid built, classy car.

    Four seater
    Audi A3 / A4 / A5 / S4 / S5 - Petrol and diesel variants
BMW M3 - Depends on your budget for car and running cost (potentally hard roof)
BMW 3 Series (petrol / diesel) - Economical with good boot space and (potentially hard roof)
Volvo C50 D5/T5 - Generally well specc'ed, solid roof rather than cloth.
Saab Aero Petrol / TTid - Generally well specc'ed, solid cars
Mercedes CLK - generally well specc'ed
    Jag XK

    Others :
    TVRs, Lotus Elan, Aston Martin.....

Obviously there's a lot of deciding factors - your initial purchase budget, your ongoing costs budget. Do you need the space of a 4 door or can you get away with a 2 door? Do you need comfort for a long journey or is it worth sacrificing an element of that for the fun factor of a lighter more agile car?
Do you want a sporty 2 seater for fun handling (MX-5, S2000), an economical one (MX-5, Audi TT Tdi, Z3 2.0i), a comfortable one (Audi TT, BMW Z3 / Z4)
    Do you want a sporty 4 seater (M3, S4, S5, CLK), an economical 4 seater (A3 tdi), a comfortable 4 seater (A4, C50, 320D, CLK, Saab) or something in between 330D (240BHP)?

My choices would be, for a cheaper 2 seater with the fun factor and for summer only, the MX-5.
As a main car, all year around use Audi TT Tdi Quattro.
    For a comfortable Sunday drive, to put a smile on my face a V6 Z3 / Z4.

    For a 4 seater :
Fun factor car, sporty car and not too worried about costs M3 / S5 / CLK .
Comfortable, quality convertible less expensive Saab Aero / Volvo C50
Comfortable, quality convertible BMW 3 series, Audi A4, Merc CLK, Jaguar

    All rounder would be a BMW 330CD M Sport / Audi A4 / A5 3.0 TDI Quattro

I was looking at convertibles last year

Great responses gents, at least it's got my mind ticking in the right direction, starting to lean towards the TT, its covering most of the bases, comfortable and useful for most of the year while still being a fun car and fairly low on the initial outlay. Deano, we can definitely discuss your car too.

Ignoring the fact I'm selling mine, the TT just a beautiful drive. The 3.2 is a petrol guzzler - I get 25mpg roughly but I drive relatively speedily, and it is a bit jerky until you know how to handle it, but it's a supremely satisfying car all round. Love it.
