So last Saturday I had a really busy day & managed to fit in the following:
So what is a gentleman to do when his fav cravat becomes tatty & frayed & the perfect replacement just can't be found? Solution: material bought on ebay, used the old one as a pattern. the blades cut out & then pinned the edges back, will sew them together on the train going to work on Monday, completed cravat will be modelled later :O)
Next on the agenda, to prepare for the evening. Just received a Vintage, ~ A. Sulka & Company ~ Silk Velvet Smoking Evening Jacket. Had been looking one on & off for yrs but the traditional model with frogging, just looks to Victorian to me but this one looked great & I took a big chance that it would fit & I wouldn't get too much duty charged by the Belgian customs.

A very luxurious man?s double breasted, black silk velvet smoking jacket by A. Sulka..
one of the world's finest haberdashers, retaining the original label
marked "A. Sulka & Company, 512 Fifth Avenue, New York, London, Chicago, Paris"
satin trimmed pockets, buttons and collar.
(small,pocket tag reads 10915) *some Glare in pictures, But Jacket has NO lightened
or thinned spots.. This Jacket is in Near Mint condition!
Luckily no charges & a perfect fit!
Sulka Smoking Jackets have been the choice of many celebrities over the decades including the vast majority of 1930s Movie Stars.The Choice of Clark Gable & countless other Celebreties, not to mention.. So tro christen the Smoking Jacket, I took the unusual step of taking it out, when of course normally, they are traditionally for home use. But that dates back to when any gentleman could be assured of his right to smoke cigars in his living room or billiard room & not a garage or shed if he was lucky! Being Belgium nobody thought anything untoward.
It was a bit chilly once the evening sun dipped below the shops & cafe rooftops but with Palms & No6's we were off! ?
I had booked a table at De Peerdestal, just around the corner, famous for its horsemeat. We decided to go for the Belgian Blue beef, only to be told it was off the menu! Don't you hate that when it happens? So we settled on the Swiss beef & I was reassured that it wasn't full of holes
) Cooked perfectly & a good base for the smoking yet to come. The evening plan, my first Behikes 54 & Zowie's first 1970's Boli Coronas Extra
Stunning collection of whiskies but turns out for display only, they declined to open a bottle for us.
Behike 54 & my paternal grandfather's cufflinks, I was also wearing my father's watch & evening trousers, As the smoking jacket is from the 40/50's era, my grandfather, a smoker, could have worn one. Moving on to the '70's Boli CX's. Absolutely superb smoke, 98pts, the evening is becoming one to remember, great company, our friendly host Thomas & his staff & perfect smokes. Highly recommend the Piano Bar for late smoking if you?re in Antwerp.
