• Romeo y Julieta recommendation

    Hey everybody,

I am still relatively new to cigars. Only smoking them for a year now and I realised that I have never had a Romeo y Julieta before.

Well there are many many more that I didn't have yet, though it's the only one of the big brands that I haven't tried yet.

So, the question is, if I could only try one RyJ, which one should it be?

E4 are best with some 'age'. I'm not a fan of the Short Churchills and they aren't really a patch on a real one. To get into RyJ without too much difficulty or disappointment I would suggest a 2014 Petit Coronas. Reasonably easy to find and very well received generally by BOTL.

Theres definitely a differing taste within the brand. Ive tried the RyJ Petit Coronas a few times and I dont like them.. So much so I never manage to smoke a whole one without chucking it away halfway. Something cardboardy about the flavours- maybe just my palette..! On the other hand I really like a Petit Churchill and could smoke these all day. Haven't tried the others (short, wide etc)

Short churchill... An unexpected offer of one Brought me back to cigars after a decade of not smoking em! It was delightful. Not perfect ... But delightful.

Short Churchills seem to win the race. Would you say they are just the best point to start or do they represent the flavour of the brand best?

Having only smoked 2 different vitolas I found em completely different.

I think they just represent the way RyJ have been going over the last decade, which isn't RyJ profile as they should and can be. Like I said, 2014 PC seem to be a shift back in the right direction.

I'm sorry, but I can't consider the Short Churchills a good representative for RyJ because I don't even consider it a good cigar.

So, not having had one, what can we expect from the 2014 Petit Corona tippexx ?

A good one should give you a medium bodied smoke with a sweet cedar profle and a balance that's classic RyJ .... and for less than a tenner UK, so if you don't like it, no great damage done. And, short of telling you to find a pre-2000 Churchills it should do the job.

It seems the Short Churchills are almost the consensus as the best RJ around... and here I was thinking some folks would mention the actual Churchill, as it is probably the most iconic vitola of the brand!

It is, but it's an expensive 2 hour smoke and not something I'd recommend as an initial introduction to a brand. The Short Churchills has only one thing in common with it .... a name.
