I use a nail. Hammer it in. If it goes in easy move along half an inch and repeat until I hit something solid. Then either fill the holes with filler or plan then so they land behind what ever you are putting up

When the midwives have gone, I'll be sticking holes in the ceiling......

Still take note of which way the joists lay and you should still be able to see the nail holes in the chip board ceiling and measure to a joist

Me personaly would go to the room above take a couple of floor boards up where you think the holes are going to be drilled
that wat gives you a rough idea, rather than the ceiling looking as if it has peppered with a shot gun cartridge.

A stud finder is about ?12. You can use it more than once. How much are the materials to fix all the holes in the ceiling? I would say it is essential kit for anyone who does diy in a newish build (plasterboard/stud construction etc).

Im just the sort of person that if it can be done for free from whatever I can find lying around I enjoy it much more

Firstly I'd advise reading what oski says and doing just that....However I've previously dropped the ceiling rose off the light fitting to find the joist direction and get a measurement.
