Ceiling Joists - Where the bloody hell are they?

Can I find em? Can I buggery.
Darling wife wants me to put up an old style ceiling drier.
In order to do this so that I know what size to get, I have to find the ceiling joists - can I find them? Can I fook.
All the tapping's getting me down.
Help me brothers! Help me, before I have a break down and just start stabbing holes in the ceiling EVERYWHERE.

You need a Stud Detector/Finder (I know for some that is a good night out )

Why on Earth doesn't the tapping sound any frigging different????
I've done the same in my daughter's bedroom, and I can hear a distinct change - in the room next door it's like the ceiling's held up my magic and unicorn tears.. Can't hear a difference anywhere!

Old or new house if old lathe and plaster won't hear the joists as pj said look upstairs but remember del boy and get the right room lol

That means emptying the boys room, pulling up the carpet and pulling up floorboards..... That's a proper pain the arse....

Maybe just drill the holes, and hope for the best
The worst that can happen is that you just need to fill in the small drilled hole…
Just a thought...

How does the ceiling drier affix to the ceiling , with just hooks your buggered you'll just have to mend the holes , look upstairs which way the floor boards run , then with a four inch wire nail or punch so a hole through your ceiling to find a joist they will be at 400mm centres or 16'' old money there will be one right to the wall to start so measure off the wall to give you a rough idea

First of all the joists will run perpendicular to the floorboards then all you need to do is lift one board to work out the spacing. You should be able to work it our from there. Unless you've got chipboard flooring of course.

Or drill the hole first with a really thin drill bit, and check that you're going through a joist

I use a nail. Hammer it in. If it goes in easy move along half an inch and repeat until I hit something solid. Then either fill the holes with filler or plan then so they land behind what ever you are putting up

New build, 2003 ish....

400 centres then joist laid opposite way to flooring upstairs , will certainly be a joist tight to external wall , measure off there in 400 increments to were you want your drier and then tap a nail through plaster board into joist , make sure glyph find both side's of the joist to ensure good fixing. although joists will be 6"or 8" x 2" old money depending on span . New timbers come out at only 45mm width so fairly narrow. Hope this helps
