I do mostly Indian sandstone though my last one was graphite slate with exterior grout which is sooooo easy. I just sealed the slate then was able to use the good old grout and sponge without risk of staining the slabs. With sandstone I lay and point it all afterwards simply to ensure the colour of the mortar stays consistent really. I have used some flexi compounds but not a fan, I hate the guns too, by the time you've messed around with the gun you could of done the job. Not a fan.
As for thermals, I honestly don't know where I'd be without my long johns [emoji4]. Having started out work in landscaping a civils then going to a sales and marketing career only to turn full circle and go back to landscaping and groundwork I can easily say that I live my job and no weather makes me miserable. I'm happier out in the rain, ice, snow, sun or wind than I've ever been in a bullcrap office job. I found that even though I was good at my job, an office based job isn't for me, way too bitchy and political.
Osky, where are you buddy? It's always good to have other connections in the trades.

I did exactly the same as you Tommy got out of this game for about four years and worked in family business, absolutely hated office environment missed the outdoors, do loads of brick laying so used to consistent gauges , honestly Tommy not teaching my grandmother to suck eggs but it's far easier and quicker to butter the joints and point as you go also the pointing holds better as it all goes off together better bond .

Spent years on commercial civils good money but got sick of the time wasters who'd rather lean on a shovel all day and do fuck all. Did some interesting work though over the years and had some great times

I find the best cure for a groundie who wants to do fuck all Is to throw bits of tree at them. It's like motivational speaking only faster and quieter.

Like using your elbows in a crowded shop were a couple of women are taking up the whole isle whilst gossiping is a subtle hint to kindly get the fuck out of the way?

Best cure is to get the fuck out of that business it'll never change, there a bunch of ignorant lazy fuckwits generally, you get 25/30 % of the workforce carrying the rest .... That's why I work for myself

Sadly it is , I think it's wrong that it's so hard to get rid of people , if someone is a lazy bastard and does the bare minimum as an employer you should be able to fuck them off but unfortunately it's not that easy too many freeloaders in this world , what ever happened to a good work ethic

I work with mainly Polish and would say that the percentage of them that actually do some work is higher than when I have been working with local guys but I still get the situation quite often where they suddenly cant understand English when I am asking for help where just 2 mins previously when I was just chatting in general they could understand me just fine. Strange that isn't it?

I have a couple of poles working with me and they are no trouble at all ask them to do anything they just get on with it. Whereas you usually get a moan from someone from here like they are too good to do it.

Most of my work is sub contracting to other teams, if I end up with a lazy team I either don't book future work with them or add a 'Twat tax' onto my bill (sometimes both)
