  • And another bit of civil liberty is lost

Smoking to be banned in cars from October next year

In an historic vote in February, Tory and Lib Dem MPs backed plans to make it illegal to light up in a car in England, punishable by a £60 fine or points on a motorist’s licence.

Agreed, I wouldn't smoke in my car because I don't want it to smell, same reason I wouldn't carry a dog in it. What I object to is being told what I can and can't do in my car when it has no relation to road safety.

I agree and I understand why it is being done but I really don't like the nanny state. God I hate politics

Sadly you need the nanny state sometimes because of the thick low life shit in this country who have no idea about morals , respect, child care etc.......

I agree with banning it. Not for health reasons, but because it's something that can take away full control of the vehicle your driving.
I'll say this again though, what's the point of bringing out laws that can't be enforced.

That's very true, how many van drivers have you seen smoking in their place of work? And who does anything about it?

?10.000 fine? Never happen. Texting on the phone ?100 I believe, might result in an immediate accident affecting life & limb; smoking in the car with kids (& maybe with a window open) is unpleasent (I used to hate my mother doing it) which apart from unpleasent might not have any ill effects fine ?10,00 which would bankcrupt most offenders. Get real. Fine for not having a National fishing licence ?2,000+ fines for serious sh*t peanuts. In the RN they used to base the fine on your rate of pay so every fine was he same ie 5 pays pay hurt the higher ups as much as the juniors. Shame the law can't work in a similar manner. Good night.

It does in the enlightened countries of Scandinavia

That brought back memories ... Not of my own misdemeanours though (!), but providing mitigation for or defending members of my Division at Defaulters. A couple of serious offences, but mostly simple stuff - drunk, late for work/duty, insubordinate.

And an amusing incident where one of my guys got drunk and decided to play war games, chucked a can of lager into the Ops Room in the Falklands, pretending it was a grenade, went on the run, got caught, arrested, RAF Police left the window open, he escaped, etc. We had a laugh trying that one.

Good old snowdrops playing at being police when they're really just security guards (yes I'm an RAF child)

Me too, though funnily enough I think my dad was relieved when I announced I was joining the RN.
