This is why despite heavy Greek etymological ties, we do not describe it in Greenk terms.
To call a language Germanic, it asserts Indo-European. To call it Western Germanic, one would assume some Greek influence.

That's interesting. I suppose when you think about it humans must have all shared a common language when we evolved

Yes. And it ended when we tried to build the tower of babel.

God split our races up to eliminate our common language.

This is what the old testament Torah) says. I believe it's just when we spread out into Asia Minor, Europe, the Orient, North America, South America, Oceania, and Micronesia of course we would have different languages. Andd when we were all one in Ethiopia, of course we'd have only one language.

Language didn't appear overnight, there would have already been differences between tribes/family groups as it emerged. If you imagine how difficult it can be to understand someone with a heavy accent (or TJ ) that may be how it was for our progenitors with groups just a short distance apart.

Whoa there, this thread is in danger of proceeding into an interlectual discussion, which is hardly in keeping with the basic level of discussing dried leaves & the means of preserving said leaves until we wish to set fire to them! Just remember Jez, the Babel fish will one day overcome our barriers of language & then...God help us

I'd imagine one of the oldest and still spoken languages must be khosain (i think spelling is correct ) as used by the hadza of Tanzania ,their clicking sounds one would believe is the origins of language and communication

The name "Khoisan" is that of a group of languages, all with clicking sounds. "Hadza" is just a subdivision, spoken by hadza people of Tanzania (less than 1000 I believe).

So I had to ask Martyn what a Barrister was like 4x.

It turns out it's just a bloody Magistrate!!! God damn!

                      Silly British confusion.

                      (the magistrate turns roooound. Smiling)

No it's not, a barrister is just a more qualified lawyer and a magistrate is a court judge, sometimes completely unqualified and known as a 'justice of the peace'.

Marc not knowing what poutine is...

Him pronouncing it 'poo-tyne' and then proceeding to describe (in horror) what it is to me. That was one of the most hilarious things I've experienced. Especially when driving through 'English weather' on cobblestone roads.
