A proper rave! Ah, now that brings back memories (kind of). The reason my first attempt to get into cigars derailed was because I discovered hard dance and staying out all weekend. Camden Palace, The Fridge, Turnmills, 414, etc. Frantic dancing and all nite/all day partying didn't really fit with settling down for a cigar. I was 33, so more than a decade ago now. Usually one of the oldest in the venue/field even then. Discovered psytrance and I was indistinguishable from the rest. Then settled down, but still don't really listen to music unless it's at least 140 bpm.

Probably going to regret this post in the morning ....

Mainly hard house, hard trance and happy hardcore, what's left of it. Got into psytrance a bit later, but remember having Tristan on loop on my CD player for ages. Started Feb 03 at some commercial trance event at Camden Palace (long story), finished Sep 07 at Brixton Academy - funnily enuf I think that was a Spin Records event (think that was the name - a psytrance label anyway). Had a blast all the way. Made some enduring friends and met my wife at a random house in Streatham after a nite/day out. My wife and her friends had been at it for a while, knew the promoters and a load of DJs, so they may well know some of the same people as you. I tagged along, got messy back stage, and didn't take in who they were talking to. Had my eyes opened up to a different world. Got a bit stupid towards the end, but no regrets. I'd spent my 20s as a serious young naval officer so it was the right time to enjoy myself.

I guess this is what they mean by hi-jacking a thread!

My first rave was in a field near Henley. I was 15 at the time....It changed my life to be honest. From there, I was in Bristol and London for most weekends raving and seriously misbehaving. On top of that I have a great friend who lives in a small town called Ghent in Belgium. Now if you are into your dance, trance and sub divisions I would hope you would of heard of the Ghent Festival....and the 10 Days Off festival that goes along side it. There was for a long time a 5 days off festival in Amsterdam, but most people in Amsterdam go to Rotterdam for the rave scene...been to the Dam 10+ times, as with most major European cities, so if you want a heads up, just ask...That also goes for the best hotels and restaurants. This friend also grew up think they went to the same Uni in Ghent (can find out) with a couple of brothers called David and Stephen Dewaele who are DJ's called 2manyDj's....They also are part of Soulwax which I enjoy also. Been to many of their live sessions...But this all came to a screeching halt when I was 25. I had been travelling the World on business and also raving and misbehaving. As I am high functioning, I could carry it, but there was a personal life breaking point. I am now a recovering alcoholic and a recovering drug addict with a diagnosis of Bipolar Class II which I take a hefty sum of medication for each day to try to balance my brain chemicals and chemistry. I just went 4 years clean and sober on the 2nd of October. I had the best decade+ that anyone could dream of and also the worst in many ways. Now I have the best time ever but remember what I did or what city I am in the night after. I once woke up in Barcelona and had no idea how I got there or the proceeding 3 nights....The pictures looked awesome. I was manic at the time, just didn't know it LOL. Is it the same without the drink, drugs and rampant sex? Hell no. Still enjoy it....I try my utmost....Is life worth living now? Hell yes...Have I made peace with myself? Yes and no as I have to fight my addictions every single day...Life also becomes easier especially as I have more to live for than just myself. A true NHS Mental Health success story.

I know this thread was requested to be deleted but I am really getting into the rave stories.
Could maybe spent a mis spent youth thread?

That is a damn good idea Wigan and apologies to all if my post was a tad too deep. I am what I am, and the stigma that goes with mental health issues I am trying my utmost to bring into the light. Peace

Its cool man it runs through my family like a river. not talking about it is not the solution. We wouldn`t shy away from talking about someone dealing with cancer would we?

Good on you for being open and frank. I don't think anyone here would have an issue with that.

I'm lucky - I don't have a self-destruct button and like to think I'm generally in control, regardless of the states I've got into. I knew it was just a phase - another experience I wanted to have. I met a lot of people a lot younger than me who were utterly rinsed out by what they were doing, and some who were 'self-medicating'.

It helped me meeting my wife not long into my journey so there was always moderation in how often/how long I went out even if there wasn't much moderation in what I got up to when I was out. And I always knew she would be there to pick up the pieces when I got home.

It got a bit stupid towards the end cos it became less about going out and more about staying in, staying up and spending a lot of money in the process. So, knocked it all on the head, became a dad and not looked back, other than the fond memories of nights out in venues and promotions that no longer exist.
