  • Silly Purchases...

As a regular insomniac I often while away the night/morning on eBay and last night I took a fancy to a little ST Dupont Humidor I saw. The listing stated it had a suggested price of $650 so I put in a bid of $65 and was told I was the highest bidder but the reserve hadn't been met. I browsed on and placed bids on other things, a few hours later i got an email saying I had been outbid so I went back and saw it still hadn't met its reserve so rather unthinkingly I stuck a bid of $150 in, thinking it probably had a higher reserve or if not I wouldn't be the highest bidder at the end of the day... frazzled mind thoughts at 3am...

So, imagine my consternation when i discovered that the reserve was $150 and I've now won the bloody thing I wouldn't mind so much but it looks like it's a bloody 12 stick travel humidor so no use to man nor beast, or at least not to me! - I've emailed the seller and asked if I can cancel the bid pleading ignorance that it was so small...here's hoping!

So what silly purchases have you made?

I thought it was at the time

    Another ebay encounter...

Drunk, as I'm sure we've all been whilst bumaying around, I noticed a kite buggy that caught my fancy. I had no experience at the time, but popped a bid on (very modest I must say). The issue was that I live in the Midlands, and the kit was in Norwich with a 'pick up only' stipulation (three hour drive, I guess). My 8.5% Duvel haze dismissed that (tell you what, twenty of those and you know you've had a drink). I went to bed, thinking nah, no chance at that price.

Bugger me, the phone went the next morning and some chap said, "you've won the buggy". I thought sheet, how the fug am I going to get that from there, it'll cost me as much in fuel. So, I was " oh great (oh sh!t), I suppose we need to sort out pick up". It turns out the chap used to live in my home town and still worked part-time, less than a mile away from my home. "I'll drop it off the day after tomorrow". Bonus.

A little different to your experience Mr O, but it started off daft and worked out well in the end.

I too have made an overseas purchase on the bay and had to cancel: usually they're very understanding, as long as you're upfront. Good luck with it mate.

I was lucky, the seller was happy to cancel the bid when I explained I hadn't bothered to check the measurements and didn't realise it as a small travel humidor. that will teach me!

I'm reminded of a colleague who thought she got a bargain when she was in that 'honeymoon period' with eBay. She bought a Buddha figure and thought it was such a bargain at only 99p...the problem was it was coming from China and the postage was ?28 it turned up a few weeks later and lookd more like Rab C Nesbitt than Buddha

There seems to be a definate relationship here between spending and alcohol

I'm only lucky I've been off the sauce for 6 months, who knows what shit I'd end up buying if I was sitting around drunk at 4am on eBay

It appears the is one upshot to ebay stopping the sale of anything vaguely fun...
