  • We should stop smoking

How many times a week or month do we hear that bit like playing the same record well getting a bit fed up with it
don't know if you chaps feel the same way.

Ok lets say we did stop smoking wether it's cigars ..pipe smoking ..ciggies like the government wants us to how much do you reckon
they would loose on tax any ideas i woulden't have a clue but i bet it's pretty high.

Tobacconist's would also be affected no point being open 6 days a week if smokers are not buying.
Other people effected after tobacconist's would be the makers of humidors no point making them if no one is buying cigars to put them in.
I personaly think the government keep saying them same words STOP SMOKING so it kind of looks good on them
if you are on a very good high income and it stopped how would you feel.
I think the government would rattle their brains and think of something else to tax us on to make up the lost revenue.

This is just my personal opinion.
Believing the government puts so much tax on tobacco because it's unhealthy is a load of bo####ks
if every one stopped smoking the government would loose a massive amount of money, yes that might save some money from the NHS
but according to what they would have us believe all us smokers would live longer there for then would cost them a fortune in paying pensions.

I can just see it now we all stop smoking and everyone's taxes would have to go up to offset the loss in revenue.
Wll guys you might disagree with what i've just said or agree everyone has their opinions i suppose.

There's a theory that the loss in tax revenue would be offset by the reduced NHS costs from smoking related diseases. Fact is our government will borrow more and more until there's an economic melt down. I'm not very familiar with our national economic policies but I would be interested in seeing a simplified balance sheet to see how much tax is paid and where it all goes!

Dont believe everything you read the facts are the UK get 12 billion plus from tobacco sales and the estimate cost to the NHS is 2-3 billion. If they wanted people to stop the would make it illegal. They just want it to seem that way so they can continue to make the money.

How much does alcohol cost the nhs compared to income in tax? Maybe they should ban petrol sales so they don't have to spend so much on the roads. Seriously where does it end? It's the people that can't control themselves that cost the nhs. Chain smokers and alcoholism. I have two smokes a week and like to think I don't cost the nhs anything.

Don't matter rob in their eyes your smoking wether once a week or twice a week.
You do make a good point though on what you said.
A drug addict could say the same as you i'm not an addict because i take drugs once a week but he's still taking a fix.

Someone that has drugs once a week isn't an addict. They're a casual user. In the same sense that someone who has a glass of wine a week is not an alcoholic.
An addict is a person who needs the item in question to survive. It is central to their existence and their lives revolve around it. A drug addict would be gouching by the time they skipped the first 24 hours.

I only smoke once or twice a week also, and I have cost the NHS a fortune over the last 8 years, not because I smoke, but because of other reasons. There are plenty of smokers, drinkers and drug addicts out there that bypass the NHS system and not bother with it. Seems like a moot point.

You've made up a word! I like it let's try and get it in the dictionary as the adjective for a junky in the pre cold turkey stages of withdrawal

Count in the few millions they lose due to counterfeiting - either by it directly or by putting helicopters in the air to fight it.

I won't argue with that one because i'm not a drug addict.

There's also the pension issue smokers due to the shorter life expectancy take less of the pension pot. If we all gave up and lived to 100 the state pension would be more buggered than it already is.

The govt would like enough of us to peg it the day before retiring so there's enough for the others.

I shoulden't think there would be enough money in the pot thats why the government wants people to carry on working
that way they are putting money in the pot rather than everyone taking it out.

As rascal has alluded to, taxation on tobacco products brings in far more money than tobacco related illness costs the NHS. (The governments own figures back this up). There is quite some margin too.

I mean no disrespect, but which service is it that confuses the euphoric state induced by heroin (gouching) and 'clucking', which is a commonly recognised term for withdrawing/cold turkey.
