Hey chaps, I've been bidding on this amazing piece of drinkable history

Four bottles wrapped in straw three unopened Seager London Gin from 1876.
Unfortunately it's gone over my limit now and I can't bid any higher. Set a limit of ?400 and list the auction last night. If anyone has an interest I'm sure you could buy the lot and sell two bottles to get most of your money back but I'm unable to hide a purchase that large. I really wanted this for my office but its beyond my reach. Unless anyone wants to go halves?

I wish I could afford to buy the lot and keep it all. Like I said though I set a limit and stuck to it. I'm thinking if spending say ?100 on the whiskey exchange to make up for my loss here. Gonna get three 20cl bottles of whisky and a nice rum. Comes to a bit more than a ton actually but this is my selection:
A rum for drinking straight up or with ice.
Origenes Reserva Especial Don Pancho 18 Year Old Rum

And three decent whiskies in different styles to help me along the road to understanding whisky including: an islay
Lagavulin 16 Year Old / Small Bottle

      A highland
Glengoyne 15 Year Old / Small Bottle

      And a speyside
Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old / Small Bottle

Hopefully those three sample sized bottles will give me a decent picture of what the different types are like and what I might take to. I know there are lots if whisky guys out there so suggestions would be welcome. I don't drink a lot so nicer bottles are fine as long as they're not silly money.

Tommy the prices on thewhiskyexchange seem pretty high, I reckon you could get more for your money than that.

Try here, same bottles but you effectively get the third free due to the price difference over the whisky exchange.

May I recommend Flor De Cana 18 Rum, it's ?50+ almost everywhere but I found it at a good price.

Im confident you won't be disappointed, probably my 2nd favourite rum after El Dorado 15.

It is lovely yeah, would look great on the office/man cave floor. There are four bottles and one is empty. Well that's what the description says. Anyway I thought I had a shot at winning it but no joy. I would still go halves if anyone joins me in time.

That rum looks lovely too. Any advice on my whisky selections? Good place to start?

Yeah, i would say that they are different enough to start picking out aspects you like.

I tend to recommend in three category's for whisky beginners from whiskeys that are easily accessibly at reasonable prices.

Light and delicate: Jura 10 or Glenfiddich 12
Medium and bordering on rich: Glenmorangie 10 or something like Singleton 12
                          Peaty/Smoky: Talisker 10, Caol Ila 12 or Laphroig 10

                          Of your choices

Lagavulin 16 is right up in the Smoky/Rich end.
Dalwhinnie 15 is Light but much less delicate than Jura and Glanfiddich.
Glengoyne 15 is Medium a little more delicate than Singleton etc. but still starting to become rich.

Thanks Marc, its a whole new world if fun. There are so many types and distilleries. Looking forward to trying a peaty dark one as I've only had light stuff like Glenmorangie and Glenrothes which I enjoyed a lot. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1408967191.930905.jpg

In that case Lagavulin 16 is a great choice for trying something Deep, Rich and Smoky as is Talisker 18 a real personal treat, I find it a tad more refined than the Lagavulin, but it is getting on for half as much again or more.

Glenmorangie and Glenrothes are two great examples of completely middle of the spectrum whiskies, if you like them then at some point your going to have to get your hands on some Glenmorangie 18.... Well worth the big price!
