Went for the interview today. Got no problems so far.
This is a 2nd job, on call 2 days a week. Not for the money tbh it is more for the interest. Might get a chainsaw license, amongst other things.
Training day is a week tomorrow.

The fish stocks are low these days as people started eating them which isn't allowed but back then I'd catch decent size chub and barbel regularly and perch, roach, Rudd and gudgeon every time. I love the river, I have a particularly quiet bit of Thames at the end of my road.Comment

The thread is about Basingstoke canal. 32 miles of waterways, last week I walked the north half from Mytchett to Woking and on the way back i met the lock keepers. I'll be working the Deepcut and St Johns stretches.

Training day yesterday. There was a windblown tree down across the canal & towpath. We got given a beer by one of the boaters. Think this is a good start! No cigars smoked yet mind you...

Doing a good job there Joe. I used to fish that canal from '73 to '85. Start with Tench & Roach & then got into the pike. Had my first pike, my first 6lb+, my first dble, my best from the canal was 14lbs in '86, which was my UK PB until this June, when I finally beat it with a Scottish upper dble. These were caught in the Church Crookham area, know locally as the Deeps. The Blacksmiths Bridge area was also good. Fishing not so good these days, often the water is too clear but there are a lot of decent carp you can see swimming up & down. Used to have water voles as well but haven't seen those for yrs. So didn't have time earlier but here's a few pics of the early days on the Basingstoke canal. The first was 11/03/84 11.14, my first dble. 2nd a 7lb'er the following March & the PB of 14lb 11/03/86, all caught on sprats. Wow look at that fish! Do you remember which bit you were on? I work the St. John's and deepcut flights. The canal was being restored back then, completed in 1991. I haven't been fishing for 20 years!Comment

Couple of lovely boats from last week:
If i hadn't got a part time job on it i'd of still been walking or cycling to other 24 miles of this amazing waterway whilst off (the other) work this week
Ironically the Basingstoke canal doesn't go to Basingstoke any more due to a partially collapsed tunnel which is now a roost fro several species of bat. That makes the canal a Site of Special Scientific Interest http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/our...gnations/sssi/
something i didn't realise is i've been driving under the canal on the Blackwater Valley Relief Road for years!
theres loads of WW2 defences along the canal & it is on current (used) MOD land, anti tank obstacles pictured & pill boxes every few miles
The towpath has good views of the runway at Farnborough airport. Threre's a 13th century castle ruin the waterway passes right by at Odiham.
A cigar was smoked at one of the pubs. 48 miles cycled!
Managed to pick a good weight of blackberries for a crumble so all in all a great day.Comment
