I would go with your heart pal.
Try and get 'the wheels in motion', possibly in the background of your day job.
Once you're set, it'd definitely be worth a shot if that's what you want to do.
Life's too short. Better to go with your heart than live a life of regret?
All the VERY best
Here's a cigar to you and your future:

The reason I ask is that I really am thinking about it. As you may know, I work as as a project manager designing training courses, but I have to say my heart isn't really in it. I've always wanted to be a Butler (some may say a strange choice). I really need to do it before I get much older. Do I plod along in a job that my heart simply isn't in, or go for it? I know I'll always regret it if I don't give it a go...I would respect any opinions or advice anyone on the forum could offer....Sorry for the somewhat random question! Nick...
Big career change and wanting to be a butler
I spent 10 years training and working as a Butler in a city livery company had a fantastic time
You get a little to accustomed to fine foods , wine , and cigars
You also have little time of your own to enjoy
I started training at 16 left at 26 to go Into hotel management for Hilton Group
However the amount of royalty I met and served was probably everyone inc the queen mother the queen and every other significant royal before William was born served princess Diana on more that a dozen occasions and princess Ann plenty of times as well as fergie andy Charles Edward etc etc etc
If you have plenty of time on your hands and want the rest of your career in servitude
Then go for it . It's a great time

Life skills an eye for detail manners politeness a great memory as you will need to always remember the special requirements of everyone you encounter
A good ironing arm especially for the newspapers :-)
Well turned out and all the little things that get drilled into u like always leave a room backwards
Lay up of cutlery a thumbnail from the lower edge of the table
100 different napkin folds
Don't forget silver dipping the cutlery
Cleaning the guilt loving cups and rosewater dishes
And the main thing managing the household servant staff as the butler is the boss
I suppose there are many many things you would be taught but they are now 2nd nature to me after so long as a butlerA woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke

I know some people are looking at this and thinking wtf, he must be mad, but it's a long-held ambition.
Think I'm going to go for it...

Career change
Sludgie, there's nothing mad about it, mad is being in a position where you've worked at the same place for 18 years and been deeply unhappy for the last 6 but stay purely because of the wages.
Best of luck to you, whatever you decide I hope it works out.Last edited by Budgie Smuggler; 05-08-2014, 12:07 PM.

Thank you to everyone who replied and gave their advice. It's much appreciated. I've decided to stick my current job and save up the 10k from that and then do the course. At least then it's effectively cost neutral. Hopefully it will lead to a position either at home or abroad. I've seen some great looking jobs in Saudi for Butlers and Under Butlers.
