  • Amplifier Refurbs

So after reading Marc's dilemma it reminded me that I've got an amp at home that's playing up and needs looking at.

I've had no luck finding anyone that seems interested in the area, I get the feeling I'm looking in the wrong places though. Google tells me most places are only really bothered with turntables [emoji53]

Like I said I could be coming at this from completely the wrong angle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated [emoji4]

What's the amp? Old or new?

Yeah, amp make and model and what's the problem?

        Amplifier Refurbs

It's an old technics su-v460 from the 70's I believe.

Problem is the channels 3 of them seem to have gone kaput or work very very poorly. One works fine though

By channels I take it you mean inputs? Because it's a stereo amp so only 2 channels. Have you lifted the Top Off? My guess is going to be dry solder at that age.

Oh and a can of contact cleaner can work wonders.

This, dodgy phono connectors, dodgy input selector switch or worse way expired electrolytic capacitors on the preamp stage.

Does any of the above mean anything to you?

It was released in 1989, would not have had a cd input in the 70's as they went invented then!

Nice looking bit of kit btw. There is a service manual on ebay for nearly the same price a a second hand replacement. Are you coming to Watford, I could grab it from you and take a look.

I meant outputs sorry, how I always referred to them with regards to my car audio haha I was separating them into left/right and front/back.

Yeah had the top off no signs of anything exploded, not sure what dry solder would looks like to be honest. I did give what I could a clean down with contact cleaner but no joy [emoji20]

It does not used valves [emoji4]

Input wise everything still works on the one output that does work. Yeah I have a working knowledge of basic electronics [emoji4] nothing looks like it's popped anyway. I'm not coming to Watford unfortunately [emoji20]

                      Dead capacitors can be subtle.

Ahh if it is output on an amplifier then there can be more candidates. Are you saying one channel has no output?

hmmm this thread has reminded me that up in my loft I have my component hifi stashed away, not used for 12+ years, a Quad 405/2 amp and 34 pre-amp with a Rega Planar 3 turntable and two Teac cassette decks.

From memory I looked at selling them years ago, a specialist hifi shop in Leicester at the time recommended an independent dealer in old kit who also serviced stuff. I'll have a dig around.

I'd like to think if have noticed the top and bottom leaking ones but could quite easily have missed the bulging ones as I wouldn't have thought that would have gone pop, maybe a culprit there!

OK so it could be Power amps, transistors, regulators, dry joints, all sorts. Did it just go dead one day or was there an intermittent stage. Probably a stupid question but have you swapped the inputs (left / right) to ensure it is not the source and have you swapped the speaker outputs to ensure it is not the speakers / cables?
