Also, Graham : very nice! I've wanted a snake as a kid. Parents said maintenance would be too much so we got beta fighting fish instead.

We would've fed them live mice, though. It's how my mates cared for em. 1 live mouse a week

I've had fish for quite a while up until recently and I actually found that they were a lot more effort for maintenance than my snakes are!

Regarding the live vs. Pre killed debate, it is one that has been going on for a long time. In the Uk we don't get a choice and I prefer it that way. Only time we would ever get away with it (and even then it would be away from prying eyes) is if the snake was not eating and on the brink after trying freshly killed.

The problem more surrounds safety in my eyes. If feeding live it is unnecessary suffering for the prey who could have just gone to sleep via gas instead. And all living things will fight for their lives which can result in a lot of damage to the predator. It's not uncommon for snakes to go off food for a period of ime and I've heard so many horror stories of people leaving live prey overnight in a tank...when the snake wasn't interested. ..The prey was hungry...and it started eating the snake (who's nervous system can't detect pain in the same way we do so unknowingly allowed it to happen). In most of these occasions the pet snake has subsequently had to be put down.

Sorry...a little bit of a rant from my part but it's something I feel quite strongly about. I'm not saying you shouldn't if the occasion absolutely calls for it and your pets life depends on it. But where it can be avoided, I think people should stick with pre - killed
