The yew is bigger than longbow. And actually good coaster size
To be clear, Yew for longbow is cut like this. heartwood&knots.jpg so thick isn't an issue. I would talk to a local Bowyer, a good piece of yew can be worth ?100's to them.

It's something I'll bear in mind for the future, I'd actually love a go with a proper long bow

It's a great hobby. I have a 50lb target longbow, I tried a warbow.... a bit to much for me TBH, something I would have to build up to.

The war bows looked awesome but if I remember right it took ten years to build up the strength to use one

There's some crazy estimate as to how heave the draw was on them. I have had a pull on a couple in the 80-120lb range and they are brutal.... Many people believe that the authentic ones were 150-170lb which is just crazy, though I have met a couple blokes who can shoot with them for a short while.

A couple of the guys I shoot with know a guy called Mark Stretton who sometimes shoots with a 200lb bow.... As far as I know he is the only man ever recorded that can draw the bow to actually shoot with, I think he's in the Guinness world records for it.

Here he is... I don't know if that's his 200lb bow though. But to put it into perspective, if you hung the bow horizontal it would take a 14 1/2 stone man hanging on the sting with his full body weight to pull the bow into that shape.... and he has to maintain perfect posture and technique while exerting that force.

Pip is a really nice and knowledgeable guy, many of my friend's shoot with his bows. We have some real artisans in this country (Adrian Hayes, John Geldard and a few others) but it an art that may soon be lost.... If you talk to ANY Bowyer in the world though they will tell you that Roy King is the only reason we know so much about English longbows, everything came from his reconstructions of the Mary Rose bows, it was a great loss when Roy passed away.
