This is for you, Sailor Simon
I saw we were getting a tad carried away with that thread on the specific author and decided to set up one dedicated to books in general

I wouldn't mind opening up with a little book p00rn. Just this little link that you missed out when on the high seas:

Ok, here's one for the forum. Worst book you've ever read?

Mind would probably be Harrry Turtledove's Into the Darkness. It is literally World Ward II with magic instead of technology. I tried to be open minded but I could only stand so much of the absolute lack of characterisation or tension before it broke me. Oh, and calling a bomb an 'egg' completely destroys any attempt at drama.

Its either that or Talking In Whispers. Only book school made us read that I hated. It turns out that torture and murder are bad, whodathunkit.

I review books for Amazon, it would be hard to find the worst one!

Again, a school book. Cry the Beloved Country, by Alan Paton. This turgid drivel was forced upon us as a set book for O level English Literature. Awful, just awful (in my humble opinion of course!)

I just gave up on a book someone at work lent me called 'Hope: A tradegy' by Shalom Auslander....this bloke finds Ann Frank living in his attic, she's been there for 60 years.

Now starting one John threw my way 'Natchez Burning by Greg Iles......also got a few more on the go, I revisited Che Guevara's Motorcycle diaries and a biog of Dizzy Gillespie.
            "Gentlemen, you may smoke."
            King Edward VII

So basically he missed an opportunity to shag Ann Frank and sell the story to the papers?

I gave up after a hundred pages (something I hate doing) but maybe that's how the story panned out!

We had La Maison de Claudine by Collette. Another yawn-fest! Candide by Voltaire and Huis Clos by Sartre were both good though...

I once started Harry potter, I know it was for children.... I didn't know it was by a child until I gave up a few chapters in. Terrible he said, she said writing.

I think it's rather telling that the book JK Rowling published under a pseudonym was rejected by so many publishing houses. After it was revealed that she was the author (still, I maintain, a deliberate plot to drive up sales given poor figures) there was lots of inquiries as to how these publishing houses had 'dropped the ball' and missed a book by JK Rowling. I personally thought it said more about her qualities as a writer than it did about the judgement of the editors.

Just realised that it's rather confusing that we have two Sailor Simons... (I say that, it's probably crossed my mind before).

I have actually read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I have to admit that he's not an author I'd usually read. However, I was stuck at sea with no books, and my slightly odd mate was kind enough to lend me the book he'd just finished reading...

I hate to say it but it was by another indie Author. I honestly can't remember his name or the title of his book, however he came on the Author's forum and asked for people's opinion of his work. I suffered the first page but couldn't read on due to the mind cripplingly poor writing that even at the age of 10 I feel would have got me a D- in English.

I didn't make a comment since many were giving him advice (some more brutal than others) and he honestly seemed like a nice guy, it was just that his book stank probably due to a lack of experience. A place everyone who's written a novel has been.
