BTW, I thinks it's only fair... And I have said it before. That the actual dedication to produce a fully realised piece of work is something to be commended.

Wow, logged on today to see this monster thread.
I think everyone is getting a little too taken up in the whirlwind and should take a step back.
The UK having just gone through/is still in a recession, feeling Austerity measures, makes any views about an item of such expense slightly biased.
China is going through a huge boom atm with a lot of wages meeting the level of back in the UK now, people there have a lot of money to spend and are eager to buy exclusive things.
Now regarding the book/s, this is a labour of love and hats off for undertaking such a feat. I know MRN has used the latest in print/photographic technology to produce this, the content should look stunning. It probably deserves a "making of" blog showing behind the scenes how the print was achieved (of exceptional interest to me as I work in print).
Considering all this and the costs involved, how did anyone think this was going to be something the average Joe could afford? Possibly due to the legendary reputation the previous edition attained, everyone has been swept up in the excitement.
Regarding the box, I actually quite like it, resembling a Sliding Lid Box. For me, the old adage "never judge a book by its cover" certainly comes to mind.
I am rather surprised by the post left in response to the comments though, explicit language always leaves a bad taste.Exploring the world - one smoke at a time.

Not to keep harping on, but I believe both sides of a story need to be told. The link above would suggest that poor Sichuan is doing pretty well for itself, being somewhat a central hub of industry and all.Licky Licky before Sticky Sticky. - Puff Scotty 22/03/14

With Monk's again on this, let's keep it calm & polite. It's easy to imagine after yrs of writing & taking all the photos for this book, that the author should get upset with some 'whinging' but 'it's his baby' & a labour of love, I think his being defensive is understandable.Simon Bolivar: Liberator of Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru & Venezuela.

I don't know why but with a bamboo case & stool, the words "silk purse' & 'sow's ear' keep coming to mind...if they'd put bamboo in my Bentley, I would have had to buy a RR of course!
