Well, we have a "What were you smoking today forum".... I think someone should ask MRN what he was smoking today, because apparently a kids bamboo bench and toy chest from ikea with a set of books a sixth of the size of a print encyclopaedia is apparently worth $5k.... Hahahahaha

well to normal avid collectors like you or i, that's pretty fckn hefty. but just compare it to the designer humidors that comes from Cuba costing around 10 000 clams for a humidor and some cigars that are just rebanded other ones.

China gobbles this stuff up and so do people who make $5000 a day. after all, they must be the ones who can pay full price for their entire collections and buy at UK or Canadian or Australian prices.

note: i believe there will be a smaller, no stand, economy version of this set anyone want to crack the first joke at what THAT price will be? anyone?

Whilst I do not love everything about this book it does not matter. It is a stunning labour of love that will serve as a reference document for our hobby for decades. It sure is expensive but this is relitave to the quality/work involved. Don't get hung up on a piece of wood.

Let's not have a 'I can't afford it therefore it has no value' debate. I'm not directing this at anyone but it has kicked off on so many forums as a really divisive discussion. Be nice if we could be a little more focused on the book.

I can't afford it but so what. Most of the things I lust after I can't afford but I'm damn pleased they exist.

I predict this book will sell out and unless MRN does a third edition it will probably end up as THE reference material of our beloved hobby.

I'm going to predict as an investment you would double your money within the first year and possibly quadruple in 5-10 years. Not such bad value in those terms. (I would imagine MRN is working hard to avoid selling to pure speculators).

Sometimes easy to forget we are all elietists in this hobby. We think nothing of burning ?20 of leaf for an hour of pure selfish pleasure.

Our cigar world is far richer for MRN and his like and i won't ridicule the output.

Nb - many a great cigar has come in an inappropriate/controversial box or custom humidor ...still smoke great

Gosh, I was execting ?3K, 5K is alot but I am with Monkey on this one.
Edited correction, I see it's $5k, my mistake Mark, doesn't sound quite so bad now, on today's exchange that's ?3,015, my original estimate; let's just hope their shipping from Germany & we'll avoid import duties.

Designed for people with home libraries and shelves big enough to hold Audubon first editions .... the rack and the box with the badly fitting lid are handy though, you can stand on them to reach the book.

Sorry just going to have to momentarily divert off track of the book for a second to try and elucidate my point.


That price is at a 50% discount for early buyers i believe (oldest sales pitch in the world.)... So $10k is the "full" RRP.


The issue being, is that this is clearly not even close to a reflective value of the materials and content. It appears to be a statement of elitism for the sake of doing so.


At $5k never mind $10k a really special piece could have been made using high quality wood and other desirable materials.... But no, they use Bamboo, one of the cheapest building materials known to man. It's almost like making the statement "you will buy this regardless of what it is, just because of who I am!"


Now back on course to the book.


Yes the cigar world may be richer for having a definitive reference piece.... But when 99.99% of all people involved in the hobby will likely never touch one, let alone buy one, I would question the amount of "enrichment" that is put back into the hobby.


The pictures may be excellent but the reality is that regardless of any claims of the production procedure, the pictures don't stand a snowballs chance in hell of being on the level of the portfolios of Ansel Adams... Or dozens and dozens, if not hundreds of other published photographers.... Photographers have the excuse of "Art" for the pricing of their wares.


ok so he will tell us that it's an exercise in high quality book making being that it's a concise reference encyclopaedia..... Um ok, then please explain why premium bound books like the 30 volume encyclopaedia Britanica and 50+ Volume editions of legal reports, don't cost this much in many cases.

Frankly if it's not the materials, it's not the quality of the content and it's not the quality of production.... I'm struggling to see what it is?

No doubt, they will sell out and the one or two people that will ever sell theirs may actually turn a profit.

So please see that for the above reasons, my opinion of the valuation of this "piece" is absurd and please consider for that amount of money a real heirloom could have been created.
