After all this talk of shaving I went out and got an excellent sit down shave from master barber Joseph Lanzante (Clitheroe Lancashire) today...... Right up there with a Turkish shave!

Did they give you a french letter upon leaving?

Haha, no.... Is that customary in the US?

By French letter, you do mean condom right?

No it is not customary here. At least no where I have been. I had been to a site were a guy was talking about a Turkish shave and at the end of it the barber gave him a french letter. I had to go look the term up as I had never heard a condom called that. I don't know if he was from the US but it seems he was in the UK for a wedding. Over here the slang term most used for a condom is a "rubber".

Have you never heard the expression 'Something for the weekend Sir?' Once you could only buy condoms at barbers and chemists.

I have never heard that expression before. I learn something new everyday.

Do you remember the jeronimo ads at the cinema, with the French powder?

I think he hit the nail on the head with that one.

Apparently to make Tamahagane steel then have to tend the process every 10 minutes by hand for up to 72 hours.... and that's just to make a block of the raw material of which only small sections are deemed good enough for razors... The rest gets made into samurai swords which.... Get this, are considered lower quality than the razors......

The raw steel alone is valued at up to 50x to cost of other high quality steel and one of the master forgers is still using steel he produced in 1970 because he believes they have been unable to produce enough steel of a quality they consider high enough since then.

It would seem that the attention to quality in these razors is by far and away beyond anything we normally experience in the modern western world.
