A few. Why do you ask? Thinking of coming round with your night vision goggles and a grappling hook?

I know but I think this book will have massive historical importance. Not just within the world of cigars but as a testament to how any subject should be treated. No matter what this book costs when it first arrives, I bet it'll be worth three times it's value within a year and will only increase in value in the the years to come. I think these books will be a publishing landmark....

not really sure..... just the initial shock of books having that value i guess. then i remembered 25 000 dollar comic books and i kinda calmed myself down.
and that does sound like good idea, but i'd rather just stick around for a herf maybe i'll start 8 hours before you in your own humidor room?

P.S. i read your original post

IMO this just sounds like an attempt to put down digital photography while vastly over emphasising the need for and justifying the use of unnecessarily expensive photography equipment.

Unless the pages of the book are going to be 10'x40' billboards, no human eye (even with the benefit of strong magnifying optics) will gain any benefit what so ever.

What does he mean by 2,500 MB and 85 MB resolution? Is he talking file size or does he mean MP????

For sure it's going to look good if he's scanning 5400dpi from 8x10 Velvia, but better than an image taken with a contemporary professional digital camera at even large book page size?..... I would say you will need unbelievably expensive equipment to measure any difference.

The whole article appeared to be a showcase and justification of how much money can be spent.

Not qualified to argue with your technical claims but it is clear this is a labour of love for MRN. He is doing it this way for the love of the medium and the look. For sure the book will be magnificent and the world will be a richer place for such a flight of fancy. There may never be another book produced on this medium at this quality.

I also remember reading there will most likely be a lower cost/quality edition after the first high-end release.

And I should do well to remember that the pursuit of perfection should be commended. The fact that their is likely to be a more inclusive edition is somewhat heartening.
Perhaps I should be less hasty to point out what I see as negative factors and just be happy that someone is willing to put in the humbling amount of effort to create a piece of work I have neither the ethic nor drive to create.... In what ever fashion they see fit.

Funny people are always talking about an e-version. (Read: why pay when I can steal it.)
One page is over 350 MB in file size. Double page pictures are over 700 MB. I don’t know of any kind of apps they could have which can handle this kind of file size.
May be it is about time for them to buy the latest 6 core Mac Pro which came out 2 weeks ago at HK$30,000+ plus additional RAM at ~HK$10,000+ plus a super HD 30″ monitor at HK$30,000+.

Or do what everyone else does .... calibrate the subject to the medium. It's only a few boxes of cigars, not the Romanoff Crown Jewels.

The bamboo thing, I think they're talking making a combo stand to carry the weight of the camera. Well combo's to do the job already exist and they are perfectly balanced. (I know of a photo shoot where the lunatic photographer had one set up 3 foot deep in the Mediterranean and still kept the camera perfectly steady).

I'm all for large format photography and 10 x 8 Sinar with a digital back is nothing new, they've been around since the 90's, and if anyone really want's to go to town there are even larger formats.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

I don't see why not. All images whether for electronic media (RGB light) or printed media (Pigment) are illusional and the colours mixed or layered to create the desired image effect with resolution /size suited to the media and the viewing distance. So, it doesn't really matter if it's a 48 sheet poster or a mobile phone it is possible to create acceptable images for either.
