  • Rough Night?

'Captian, oh my Captain...' We have been building up gently all day but around 20:00 whilst typing away on this PC, we have suddenly gone up to a real sharp 8-10o Roll & 65 knots. Anything not tied down is moving & I am having to type & hold on to my desk with one hand. The chair was tied to the desk but when I got up to make tea the roll jerked the chair & it broke the tie, hurtling across the bay. Now re-tied & looking fwd to a being thrown around the bed type of night. In the RN everyting was designed to be fixed or solidly fixed when required, sadly not on this ship. Third good blow this trip.
So how's it on the beach chaps, blowing the cobwebs away or just a little damp?

Bit wet and windy in the burbs this afternoon but just dry and breezy now. More expected tomorrow though. Hold on to that bed!

Trees getting unearthed in Cumbria, how does sleeping work in that situation Simon.... Or doesn't it?

God, I miss rough days and nights at sea - it's not quite the same when I'm sailing. I usually loved sleeping when it got a bit rough, but do remember one occasion when it got a little too rough... The ship pitched and rolled to such a degree that I was literally flung from my bunk over my lee-cloth (well, metal restraining bar) and onto the floor! I rolled across the cabin and crashed into my locker, which I had clearly not secured properly as the door swung open as the ship rolled back the other way, depositing the contents all over me. Five seconds later my door swung open and an (initially) concerned looking steward practically wet herself laughing at the carnage (and promptly told me she was not going to clear it up...).

Simon. Female stwds onboard, had to come offsore to get those, none at sea in the Pusser in my day. Can confirm being thrown about in a confined space of a yacht not good. Once picked up a Nicholson 55' in Bermuda & sailed her to the Azores. Ten day crossing & interesting story which I'll save for another day but here's the proof.2012-02-18_357.jpg And a pic of our stwdess, I always felt there was a warm front coming through when she was on deck.

It finally calmed down enough to sleep around 01:00, some damage reported this morning, some scaff tubes slid out of the rack, various debris outside to be tidied up & await the next blow. Hopefully we're clear no until my crew change on Fri.

Best I can offer is a rough crossing of the Bay of Biscay on the Queen Victoria, we were getting tossed from side to side in bed but my lovely wife is a very comfortable landing spot!
