What sources will you be recording from? And how much are you looking to spend?

Basically, it's for audio interviews/podcasts while I'm out 'in the field' - sometimes quite literally! I have no set budget as frankly I have no idea where to start, but I don't want anything top end. Just needs to be portable, robust, reliable and user-friendly unit for a technical eejit like me

      Thanks for the help.

Ok portable, I would be looking at something like a gopro hero3.

If you want even better audio then you could capture the audio on something like a Tascam DR-05 and add it back in during editing... but your starting to add complication and in all honesty the sound on the gopro's is decent.

Oh and as a Mac user you should already have iMovie for free which is reasonable.

Just a thought, do you have a smartphone? If so depending on the model, you may be surprised at the quality of the recording device in your pocket!

We'll the iPhone 5 does a pretty decent job of recording 1080p Footage at 30fps and can use a quality Mic like the Apogee or the much cheaper iRig.

In fact the last couple iPhone's Will be good enough for all but the most demanding Vlogging needs.
Sound wise all models Will be capable of recording high quality audio with a good external Mic.

I would say, certainly give it a try. You lose nothing in the process.

A good cheap alternative is the turtle beach xl1 gaming headset it has audio in red and white which you could buy a jack to convert to 3.5mm audio in. It then gets powered by a usb port to provide the power the amp mic is good quality and at ?23 there good set

Are you sure that will work with portable gear Sean? The Red/White are stereo inputs for audio playback only, I'm not sure they pass mic audio via USB either (I could be wrong) as my understanding is that the Mic is designed to work with the 2.5mm MONO audio jack of the Xbox 360 controller.

If you really wanted to do it on the cheap, search for iPhone Lavalier Microphone.... You can pick them up for about ?9.

Lavalier Mics are the tiny Lapel mounted Mic's you see people wearing on TV interviews, they are the standard Mics used in hands free applications where a boom operator is not available.

Edit: My personal first choice for an iPhone setup would be the Apogee Mic around ?150, this gives you the option of boom operation for field work or Mic stand for indoor/sit down interviews. It's an excellent professional quality product which will give years of service.

Second choice and to be honest I would have one anyway at the price (backup and where no boom operator is available) would be a cheap Lavalier

Thank you, I appreciate the advice. I think for starters I'll go with the Lavalier and see how things progress.
