they call it 5 star. can't be THAT bad right?
i'm actually going with my parents as long as they have a beach and an airconditioned room, they're happy. and as long as i get a Havana trip, i'm happy we can both deal with the unsavoury food.... not a big deal for any of us!

Jeremy, sure your parents will have a great time. I have had people who do travel 5* alot, that Cuba does fall flat in that department; they just haven't got the resources to be able to give 5* service. The best hotels are a good 4* IMHO & if they are just looking for a beach, AC & decent food, they'll not be disappointed.

It's just that Valdero doesn't give you the whole Cuban experience. A large percentage of visitors never leave Valdero & think they have seen Cuba. Unless your going with a group of cigar lovers when you can concentrate of cigar factories & farms, the rest of us will always have to compromise with our wives/GF/parents, then you have to find time in their progamme to break out & spend a few days in Havana or further a field. We had booked a two center stay, 5 days Havana & 9 in Valdero. Wish it had been more even but there you go, it was to celibrate our 20th anniversay. But out of the 5 days in Havana we went to Vinales & expected to stay a night there. We ended up staying two, so this was extra cost as we were paying dble accomodation costs but really made our holiday & definately gave us a Cuban experience. Of course Cuba is a very big country. I think the idea that's it's an island, makes us think if it as small but it cannot be seen as a whole over several holidays.
Trinidad is a day trip from Valdero & we are expecting to go there next time. Think you'll be able to join a coach trip their or share a taxi with a few others you find who are interested in going.
Let us know how you got on & of course what smokes you smoked & what you brought, don't forget to keep the receipts!

Simon put a bit more effort in to his response

Receipts - because if cuban customs stop you and you don't have the receipts..... you can guess. that said, last year, it was straight to check-in to drop your suitcases in so not sure if/when you'd need to present receipts. note : i was probably the only person with a suitcase that wasnt tied/wrapped/locked! maybe i was just lucky that a baggage handler didn't open my bag and help themselves?

Re: hotels. remember, cuba is not just a 3rd world country (in most regards) but also subject to communism and the trade embargo. so a 5* hotel just can't come close to american/european 5 *. i almost laughed out loud when i stayed in the Hotel National... it's at best 1/2 star - but that's not the point....

One of the few hotels I stayed in that felt like a I'd jumped into a teleporter and left cuba was Hotel Marques de San Felipe - brand new and felt european. the restaurant next door was excellent as well. but note, for the 5* type treatment in terms of hotel/food you will pay equivalent uk/us costs.

la guardia was an experience - amazing setting, bizarre environment and great food
