Humi tube care

I have been gifted a cohiba robusto in a humi-tube by a friend. I have not used one before. In the bottom is a piece of sponge, not the usual oasis foam I have seen before. Any thoughts? I have both pg solution and DM water.

IMHO a closed tube is a closed tube, if the cigar is fine when it goes in it'll be years before any change under normal circumstances..I personally think these tubes are just a gimmick.

In what circumstances would you use this? I'm assuming for travel purposes? I'm sure PG solution would be fine. I'm sure just a very small amount would suffice for such a small environment. As above seems a little gimmicky, but certainly looks very attractive!

I think it's a gimmick piece too, saw one recently for a Partagas. I think they are a nice piece if you want to give a cigar as a gift. I have several different size travel cases, so I doubt I'll be using it. Was just intrigued.

I think they're meant as a gimmick, but they work nonetheless. I have a Cohiba one and a RyJ one. I binned the sponges in them and put crystals in instead. If I take a single cigar out with me somewhere and it fits one of them well, I'll take it.

Travel humidors are the way to go. And I'm pretty sure a 5stick case costs the same as this tube.
However, the window is quite nice. I wouldnt pay over $4 for something like this though. I wouldnt mind it as a gift either.

I would go as far ss to suggest a sealed tube with a wet sponge can create mould witin a week if exposed to temp swings.

As puff said if it goes into a tube good you wont need qny humidification in any normal timeframe.

...so for me a gimmick, and a potential cigar ruiner.

For what it's worth, last year I was given by my wife's old aunt a Boli No2 tubos, which had been oringinaly handed out by my father at our wedding in Feb 1967- 45yrs. This had been stuffed in a draw with other bits & pieces from the wedding.

The condition was as good as some I have from 2005. That said, the actual taste was perhaps a little soft, plenty of smoke, but lacking that rounded richness I well rememberl from the 1960-70's.
Nevertheless, still a reasonable smoke

Wow, I'm surprised you could bring yourself to smoke it! I hadn't realised tubos were that protective. I thought they were purely to protect the cigar from being knocked, not from lack of humidity. Thank you.

As I recall the tubos screw caps of the day, comprised of an inner disc seal of cork, overlaid with aluminium foil. Almost totally air tight, if well screwed down. Hence, what humidity was in, usually stayed in.
