  • The Hippodrome cigar terrace

At the top of the Hippodrome in Leicester Square, which is now a big 24h Casino.

The intention is to be a bit Vegas style with some Old English grandure. So no membership or dress code. The outcome is a not happy looking crowd of people in winter coats dropping their hard earned into machines and tables like it is going out of fashion.

Make the trip upto the top and come to a two level smoking deck. Downstairs is slot machines , stools and ashtrays (unclean and full of cigarette butts). More non-smiling people swearing at fruit machines.

Good - no charges, dress code or issues, heating ok, fairly well covered.

Bad - dirty, unattended and every ashtray full of fag butts and tables sprinkled with fag ash. Akin to an oldschool, rough pub ...but without any atmosphere or pleasure (i have had many a good night in such establishments).

Now each to their own but this is not the kind of place i can enjoy a fine puro. I have bag full of nice smokes but they probably won't be consumed here.

A few of the guys coming soon so perhaps i will be convinced of the error of my judgement ...going to take a lot of drink mind

Interesting and have found similar in other casinos around LS, with many frantic smokers.

I have found The Montague very pleasant...

This is so far removed from almost any other London cigar venue. We may go to the Montogue, or the Whisky club, or 10MS, or Boisdale...anywhere except here.

Once a casino adopts an open door policy, standards plummet ! Such a policy also involves an extension of slots - you don't require gaming skills to play slots - so it's perfect for the great unwashed - and they become the bulk of your customers. I'm not surprised at the poor standard but it is a 'smoking terrace' not a 'cigar terrace' and there is a difference. Not a venue I would head for in any event but information worth knowing - file under 'places not to visit'.

There were some ok heaters last night but so what, a heated turd is still a turd.

You know, Pete, I don't believe I was the one to coin the term 'snob' on a previous thread and choosing not to frequent certain establishments isn't necessarily snobbery. For example, I don't visit bingo halls or take my holidays in Benidorm. That doesn't make me a snob, it makes me selective ! The important point is that I don't criticise others for doing so - it's called freedom of choice. As to the 'cigar terrace' I believe others have taken the same view as I did and the prevailing opinion seems to be that this is one place to avoid. Or am I being obtuse ?

Amen to that ! Can't say that I'm impressed with provocative posts. Not sure that's what this Forum's about.

Plus one to "that's [not] what this Forum's about." Although we do have our moments from time to time.

You appear to have a cool head about you, muchacho! Cheers to that!

peoples view on the cigar tearrece (if you can in all honesty call it that) are correct as i said it is crap,i was the one being obtuse just trying to make the point that things can read in many ways on forums like this.
As to the great unwashed i did not see it that way,to me it was a depressing place to be, desprate people reaching for a dream just like all the adds for bookmakers we see all the time and betting shops popping up in all the poorer areas
