I was watching the To The Manor Born Xmas special the other day and was pleased to see Peter Bowles smoking a Monte (and he looked like he knew what he was doing, not just acting).

For me it's Yul Brynner in The Magnificent Seven - already mentioned, I know. That cool, casual lighting up on the buckboard of the hearse - an iconic image. I also agree with the Peter Bowles comment - he seemed very much at ease with his smoke - so many don't !

If that was the hospital 'comedy'- I never quite got the hang of it. Didn't it also have James Bolam in it ? As I say, a bit above my head. Peter Bowles (for me) was always the cigar smoking Lord of the Manor. Don't we get very stylised ?
