Humans have always had a natural curiosity and a desire to explore.

Looking up and out (space) is part of a natural desire to expand our confines.

I think a lot of humans unfortunately, should spend more time looking inward and examining what's inside them and improving on what they find.

I don't think it's very sinister. Most of the older telescopes are located in the 'advanced' countries. Air and light pollution make them less effective .... so, Universities etc are building new ones in remoter areas where the skies are cleaner.
