A lot of tourists come to this country to visit places associated with the monarchy, but I think that they would still visit them if they weren't occupied by the royal family. After all, millions of tourists visit the palace of Versailles every year and they don't seem to be at all bothered about the fact that France doesn't have a royal family. In fact, if we put the royal family in a council house and opened up Buckingham Palace to tourists we might attract more of them!

I'm really not convinced by the 'history, tradition, identity' argument. You don't choose the country that you're born in and this country has done plenty of things to be ashamed of as well as things to be proud of. Our history is largely one of bloodshed and exploitation. I think that human beings would be more likely to treat each other with dignity and respect if they saw themselves as citizens of the world rather than identifying with the history and traditions of one country.

      +1 on that one.

Bfg - I was referring to the old boy, phillip isn't it, mr gaff himself! Plenty of them on here - http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...live-90-133848

      This one seems relevent -

To the Aircraft Research Association in 2002: ?If you travel as much as we do, you appreciate the improvements in aircraft design of less noise and more comfort ? provided you don?t travel in something called economy class, which sounds ghastly.?

This seems to be the general level though -

To black politician Lord Taylor of Warwick, 1999: ?And what exotic part of the world do you come from??

Definitely great for the world impression of the UK -

To a British student in China, 1986: ?If you stay here much longer, you?ll go home with slitty eyes.?

What a national treasure he is eh?

Oh come on mate, the man is from a different era.
I agree the comments are inappropriate/racist but are you telling me no-one on here has grand parents who on occasion are inadvertently racist or homophobic?
And like Harry, Just because he is a Royal it doesn?t mean that he isn?t susceptible to the same faux pas as the rest of the population!
As well as being famous/ infamous for his comments he has also done a lot of good
He co-founded the WWF (animals not wrestling!) and continuesto do work for loads of charities.
Even with his health failing he carries out his public duties without a word of complaint showing a spirit that I feel is largely lacking in today?s society.
Oh and before you find it this is what he said at a WWFdinner-

If it has four legsand is not a chair, has wings and is not an aeroplane, or swims and is not asubmarine, the Cantonese will eat it. --

I've got a great cigar collection - it's actually not a collection, because that would imply I wasn't going to smoke every last one of 'em.

Versailles has 3 million visitors a year and London 30 million, I don't think they are comparable in any other way than perhaps we will drop to 3 million visitors if we lose the living history we have here. Don't disagree with you about the history being grey or that perhaps we would have more respect for one another if we all associated ourselves as being part of the world and not a particular country... it's moving that way.. but I think it is a long way off!

Maybe you could get the ball rolling by sending your stash of cigars to a third world country?

Comparing the number of visitors that go to Versailles with the number of visitors that go to London isn't really fair. A more accurate comparison would be London vs Paris or Buckingham Palace vs Versailles.

Luckily I don't think that having expensive cigars is a top priority for people suffering in the third world - but I do my bit for charity when I can. In fact, given the relative size of incomes I think that a lot of people do just as much for charity as the royal family.

I didn't know that the Cantonese ate tables, hang gliders and deep sea divers!

Just need to add that I saw Harry yesterday at lunchtime. Sat 20' from him, he was sat with his blokes eating the same old boring food as them. Having a laugh and a joke and just getting on with it.
He may make some daft decisions at times but he's out here to do a job and he's doing his best to just get on with it, like the rest of us.
