  • Laptop's buggered.

    Anyone know anything about laptops?
The screen has gone black. I can see faint images but everything else is black.
I've plugged it into a spare monitor and it works, so it's definately the screen.
    It's a Dell Inspiron 8600, about 5 years old.

All laptops have the screen wires threaded via the hinge, overtime these connections can be loosened or get worn due to constant opening and closing, swinging or carrying it by the lid. it may be that it has just worn and the connection has become loose, does it show any signs of life when you wiggle it backwards and forwards? (Oooer, Missus) sometimes there is a very small switch (bit like the thing that turns the light off in the fridge near the hinge of the screen which triggers the screen off when you close the lid. if you have one press it with your finger check it's not stuck.
or maybe the screen itself has died. the fact you can plug in another screen tells me the laptop itself if fine. either way you probably need to take it in for repair or continue to use it with the other screen it.

Hope that helps, can do too much more as I am at work and would have to charge you a consultancy fee of ?125 per hour for my services

Heh I don't think he means you're actually new to here.

I never touch laptops much, but if you've checked connections like boss hog has suggested, try buying a replacement screen on ebay. I stepped on my Vaio last year and got one off ebay for a relatively small amount, and easily replaced it myself.

Alternatively, there's very attractive deals going around at the mo, with this one at the top of my list for budget buyers:

http://www.dixons.co.uk/ (can't link directly as the stupid site makes everything session based) Dell 1545 (black at ?399) Product code: 859916.

Dale, it's been the best bang for buck since Christmas. You really can't go wrong for that price imo. Bloody good spec for the money, and for the outlay, you can always upgrade in a couple of years without feeling you've thrown money away.

I recommended this one to a mate after you made it your Thought For The Day on Facebook once. He thinks it's brilliant.
