  • Window Technical Support Centre

    Quote from Daniel
Just had some fun with a cold caller saying he was from "The windows technical support centre. Sir, we are getting error reports from your computer which means there are viruses on your computer, sir."

I told him that we only have machines running Solaris in the house (bit of a fib, two windows machines and a mac). He then tried to argue that Solaris is not an OS, and eventually hung up the phone. I find these calls rather amusing (I work for a big IT company, so know a little bit about computers).

Has anyone else been contacted by this company? Does anyone know anything about them? I was called this morning in Belgium, I thought it was part of our web support survice & went through things with them & they opened files showing my computer was in the red danger zone for being blocked by virusus that had by passed Norton. I did wonder whether they were authentic but it did seem to be genuine. They spent an hour on the phone & more than an hour working on the computer remotely 'cleaning it up'.
The computer is working & does seem to be faster, I had a lot of recent problems so thought this call was a direct result of that as they said it had flagged up in the office as incoming virus reports.

So have I paid for something I didn't need, which I can live with or allowed some dodgy company full access to my details? Nothing much on my laptop & I don't do my banking or anything on here although I have made interent purchases ect. They also said I wouldn't need to renew my Norton as they programme would be all I needed. Wife's not convinced & will re-new anyway.

I think it's yet another scam. To be honest I wouldn't allow anyone access to my PC.

Though it does seem more geared towards, we will alarm you then you'll give us money and we'll do very little and then piss off.

This is worth a laugh though

Sorry Simon but sounds like you've been scammed, Microsoft would never contact you like that, also your machine doesn't send out error reports like that, chances are they did either a) nothing, or b) nothing harmful (or particularly useful either), but it would have been a waste of cash either way... It doesn't seem like these companies usually do anything seriously bad like stealing account details, it's just cold calling at it's worst with some liberal lies thrown in at the start...

Yes Simon it is a scam.

Microsoft will never call you about things like this. Ever.

Even if your computer appears to be running fine, it's a scam. The software they installed is likely some form of malware. If you were to ask the person you spoke with if they are certified by Microsoft and what their certification number is, they would hang up. No reputable company would ever call you to tell you about a virus on your computer.

It’s a little long, but…it delivers.  FYI one NSFW F-bomb at the end, but it is sooo worth it. I myself have had three of these calls on my wife’s phone.  I HATE THEM SO MUCH. via…

The second comment (gtrcar5) is me... I've had these calls before.

To be on the safe side I would change passwords after a full scan of the computer for malware or phishing viruses. Better still use a different PC to change your Ebay and [EDITED] passwords until you have screened yours. it happened to a work colleague and was advised to this by our IT manager..... better to be safe....

Simon, my dad had this and ended up having to ditch his computer and get a new one because my brother (who is fairly computer literate) could not remove the sh!te they had left on his machine. i would get your machine professionally checked out specially if you do any internet banking. They could have installed key loggers which will store and transmit your key strokes when you log in.

OK guys, thanks for the info so far, as I paid by Visa can I cancel this transaction? They told me they were THE Windows support, if this is false then it's fraud & I should be able to get my money back? For some reason they prefered Visa, which is what I would have used anyway. The company they charged it to was UYQAELLEMETER.NV a Dutch registered company, which would be normal enough over here.

Ve had these a good few times. The first time I hund up after a minute and the second time I playyed along. They tell you what to do I.e go to my computer, click this, click that so I did. It then brings up something to do with the computer (no idea what). He then said do you have a number called the 'something or other' number, so I said yes, he then said and I quote 'read it out to me' so I refussed he then shouted the same comment so I once again said no and hung up. I can still hear his little voice haha

This isn't what I wanted to say on my 1,000th post but I have cancelled my card, they are sending me a form to claim back my money. Will speak to Telenet service provider tomorrow.

Good man. At least you know your the only one spending your money and you cant be held responsible for any further charges on the card. Not having the card for the next 7 days is the only inconvenience but better that then months of arguing with the company over charges you never made.

Best to run a full virus scan with norton and something like spyware S&D or similar spyware program.
