Blackberry is struggling to catch up in terms of functionality, and build quality (and iPhone is just as secure for email purposes). Just not a fan of Samsung since the last Samsung phone I had was useless (and was too light to use as a doorstop).
HTC is a nicely made phone, and if you get on with Android, then it's a solid choice. Although I'd argue that the iPhone is better for music and has a superior app store (I.e. less malicious apps).
I should add that I'm biased towards iPhone as I have one (and an iPad). Although my favourite thing about both is that if they break, I can go into an Apple store and if I moan enough I will get a new phone or iPad.
I'd always say go for an iPhone. I love mine, have had a 3, 4 and an iPad. I find iOS really easy to use and very friendly (especially compared to Android - I flirted with a Samsung G2 for 2 weeks and returned it).
However, the Samsung G3 is looking interesting. And if you aren't already tied into/used to a phone operating system it may be worth a look at.
Gemma (my GF) has just got a samsung GII. I will be getting one when I'm due an upgrade unless the GIII is a sensible price. So my recommendation is the samsung.
She had a much older Samsung and it was total junk. So they have come miles since.
As an 'IT guy' (official job title) I get asked this a lot. The first words out of my mouth are usually "Whatever you do, don't get an iPhone!" In all seriousness, if you want a smartphone that's relatively easy to use and you are already tied into their system with an Apple ID then go for it. However if you want a customisable operating system running on state of the art hardware then an Android phone is the way to go. HTC and Samsung are the two best manufacturers right now imo, I slightly favour Samsung though. I love my S2. I even managed to convert my wife who was a hardened iPhone user but now she couldn't go back.

I have a galaxy note and iphone 4s and yes, the android operating system Is more customisable but far less refined in my opinion than the iphones ios. As for latest hardware i cant stress enough that yes htc one x has a quad core processor but i have never had any sort of slow down on my iphone or ipad whike the note which has a faster processor is slower than both just the same way my quad core dell is slower than my dual core macbook pro. Apple refine their products much better than the android phones and lets not forget that ios was buikt for the iphone specifically and just built and made to fit later on like android which was built and then shoe horned on to phones htc, samsung and the likes have made.
im useing the htc wildfire at the moment so the one seemed the ideal upgrade but looked a bit large .
never owned an iphone so thought i should try one out but its getting a bit old now
