  • how to keep stored our cigars

    Hi all!

I've been reading a lot about how to keep stored our cigars, ((temperature between 16?C - 18?C and humidity between 65 - 70%))... I've got a cohiba robusto 25u box and a Patargas 25u box serie D N4 both of them in its original cedar wood box.

But I've got some questions about it, how long can I keep the cigars stored in its original wood box? Could be possible to keep stored on its correct conditions without humidor box?

    Thanks in advance

    Regards

If you don't want to spend money on a humidor then it may be worth while making a tupperdore. Simply buy a plastic box with a good seal (air tight if possible) from QD or ebay. Then get some form of humidification (I would suggest either 65% or 70% Puck beads available from cgars. The 70% come in smaller amounts and are therefore cheaper. Then put your distilled water (available cheap on ebay or Tesco), put the beads in the box, and leave for a day and check humidity (hygrometers available cheap on our best friend ebay), then if it ok, pop in your smokes. Box should cost about ?10 depending on size, beads about ?10 depending on the amount you get, distiller water about ?2 and hygrometer about ?4. Good luck. Keep us updated
A cigar is not measured by its cost - It is measured by how much it burns your fingers

      Hi trig

How long have the cigars been stored in their original boxes.. but not inside a humidor?
Plus, where are you keeping them currently.. and do you have any idea as to the ambient temperature/humidity?

This is what I do now, just buy a lock and lock 3 litre tupperware box from Amazon and sling the box of cigars in it with some beads and voila. No stress and cigars are kept perfectly humidified.

Hi, First of all, thanks for your answer...

          * How long have the cigars been stored in their original boxes.. but not inside a humidor? around 3 months

          * Plus, where are you keeping them currently.. and do you have any idea as to the ambient temperature/humidity? not sure yet, I'm waiting for the humidity meter

I think I'll do what James says, hopefully I'm still on time to save my cigars

          Regards!

There is a lot of info online to bring them back to life if they are dead.

Yes they'll be fine, get the 70% beads if they're a bit dry. Let us know how you get on

After a couple of weeks.. perhaps. But, three months out of a humidor is a looooong time.

The most important aspect to remember is.. don't rush it*.
You'll enjoy them much more (the flavours and aromas) if you gradually re-humidify them.

*Introduce moisture slowly (over several months) or you risk them splitting.

Good luck and welcome to the OCD world of cigars!

thanks a lot for your help !!

I'll post a picture of my humidor as soon as I have ready, for the moment they are in the fridge, in their original box and inside a plastic box, is going to be for few days while I receive the humidity timer. Good or bad to put it in the fridge ??

                  Regards!

Just remember any sharp change in either humidity or temperature will cause the cigars to swell/contract and you run a big risk of the cigar splitting, when you eventually come to re-humidify them make sure you build the humidity gradually (we are talking over weeks and months & not days), hopefully they will be ok.

Unless you have your fridge adapted to 16-18? with RH Beads and cedar wood inside, I would lift them out and keep them in a room which has a constant temp of 16-18?. Then put in the humi once seasoned! I did that when I got my humi. The sticks smoked fine!

This is the worst thing you could do! Take them out of that fridge immediatly, before they are hopelessly dried!!!

                          Hi all!

I've got my home-made humidor ready, but now my problem is that I can't get high level for humidity , I'm with 23? and 45%...

I wonder if the box has to be hermetically closed because is not, maybe they will be better in a plastic tupperware.

I found few cigars with little holes, I've separated those with the others, see attached pictures.

                          Thanks in advance

                          Regards

                            Hi Trig

I've a few questions regarding your set up.
When you say it's a home-made humi.. do you know what kind of wood it's made out of*?

*Ideally, you should be using Spanish cedar, for several reasons: i.e. Aroma.. maintenance of humidity.. and also because it's repellant to the tobacco weavil.

Your humidification device is a mould risk.. you need to be looking into crystals or beads, etc.

You're right about the box needing to be hermetically sealed, the gap shown in the picture won't be helping.
Did you season it.. salt test it etc?

Also, I'm sorry to say that the cigars with the holes in are a strong indicator that you've got a weavil infestation.
It's not the end of the world.. but you'll need to freeze ALL your cigars to kill it off.

Do NOT put anymore in the box until you do.

Lastly, (without wishing to upset you) if I could offer an observation.. the cigars you've invested in are good ones (and not cheap).. it would be a pity not to enjoy them at their best.
To that end, there's a great deal of excellent information on both this site (and the internet in general) on how to: buy, store and smoke them.
You'd be wise to invest some time in doing a bit more research before buying any more.
It'll be worth it in the long run.

I'm with the Cat on this. Seems slightly at odds to spend so much on fine smokes only to leave the storage conditions to chance...
