  • Don't throw away those Cigar Tubes! Make something of them

About a week or two ago I was having a clear out, and I have stowed away many tubos. I thought I could put them in a glass frame (see : ant farm) of sorts, but it ended up with me chucking duplicate tubes away. I still have one of each, although I couldn't bring myself to chuck out the cohiba doubles!!

This weeks latest fad in my mind, is candle making! I do like candles, and the past year or so I normally put them on a night, one for a bit of heat (our toilet is like a freezebox in the winter as it is on the corner of the house, 2 external walls. With a few candles SAFELY going, it warms it up very much), and two, for a soothing atmosphere. I normally buy mine, but I decided to melt one down, and have a play. I'm sure you can see where this has lead to.....

I had the great idea of using cigar tubes as a mould. I'm merely a novice candlemaker, with no equipment other than a saucepan, waxed string (dipped myself) and whatever moulds/containers I can find.

Tried a first run with the tubes and I must say I am impressed. It was a bit of a challenge to get them out of the tube. The Monte tube was sacrificed to the candle gods, but I managed to salvage the larger one usuing a different approach. I hope i can re-use, as this could be the start to a fabulous relationship!

    Hardened up, stuck fast

Got them out! Looking nice. I've never been much of a PHYSICAL crafter, but I must say, it's nice to see something you MADE.

Not bad at all, if I do say so!

Beats having my tubos stuck in a box somewhere! I wonder if the tubes with moulded text on would come out on the candle. Cigar branded candles. You heard it here first!

It's quite fun I must say. I've never been one for crafting, but I can totally see myself getting into this. All you need is some string, with a little metal weight (I pinch the ones glued to empty tealights!). Melt some wax in a pot on a LOW HEAT, then run the string in the wax and let it harden. For the tubos, just put the waxed wick in, and pour the wax in, simples. I have a metal food rack that I just wedge the tubos in. Nothin classy here!

In terms of wick centrality, it's a bit off, but the flame will burn equal as the wax pool burns the whole candle regardless.

I'm gonna ask for a candle newbies kit for Xmas, so i'm sure i will get into it properly. It's like getting into cigars all over again

Great work Mr B. Are you going to go any further than just melting down candles and remolding them? My misses goes through candles like I do cigars, and I have been telling her recently to make her own, but go the full hog, and get the colour, smell, size etc, that she wants.

I plan to! I've literally just bought my first batch of wax, wick, wick pins and some real candle moulds. I don't know how good it will be in terms of price vs buying versus making, but I can see it being worth it because they're your own offspring! Just gotta wait on the postie for my little kit and I shall get to work.

I think it's worth looking into, it's quite fun, and if you go through candles loads, why not.

I looked in hobby craft, and it was ?19.99 for a 4lb block of wax. I looked online and a 5 KILOGRAM block(s) were ?16.50. You're always better off online

It is almost amazing that there are actually still shops in existance, when you can find everything online for a far better price!

Good luck anyway! I;m sure they'll turn out great! And I completely agree, even if the price works out to be the same as that of buying them, then you still have the joy of knowing you crafted them! Where did you buy everything online if you don't mind me asking, just so I can send it to the misses to give her something to think about.

They are also great for making small cash / key safes to hide inside a wooden door.

I have a waterproofed one in a fencepost out in the garden for spare keys. Fair play to any thief who manages to find them

Think you can buy either scented wax, or buy scenes and dyes, there's quite a selection.

I got my bits from 4candles.co.uk
