A shed that thinks it's a pub.

So, I decided to knock down my horrible garden shed and build a new one.....as a pub.

I have downloaded a few designs and am going for something quite basic, pitched roof 4 walls, twin opening front doors. However I have a few questions that some of you may have knowledge of:

What is the best (most hardy) timber to use, I like the pine effect like log chalets but then that means varnishing each year (I would like as little maintenance as possible)
SHould I bother with guttering?
What would be a decent but cheap insulation?
For the roof is using felt tiles okay, I think they look better than plain felt sheet.
I would like to put in a very small log burner for the winters, I guess if I mount it on a concrete slab it'll be okay (i'm slightly worried about it catching fire as it will be right next to the house).
Security, what's best padlocks? I'm going to tongue and groove the whole thing and may put M8 studding through the whole structure.

Any other advice?

The only aera I can really comment on is the log burner. My parents have something a little similar to what youre going for I think, which has a small log burner. It was placed on some built brickwork underneath, and has a metal chimney that extends up and through the ceiling. It is always kept pretty small, but it has a pretty sturdy lock keeping the door opening firmly shut, so there is never really any worry of the place going up. As long as your careful it shouldnt cause you any problems, plus, the rewards of having it in the winter will be huge! Definitely go for it!

As for the inside, are you having a bar based structure and a couple of chairs? Or are you going to have some comfy chairs and a nice smoking area to compliment?

Are you going to brew your own stock also?

Think about shielding behind the burner too to stop radiated heat burning the wall.

Concrete base and keep the shed off the ground. Use chicken wire to stop rats etc. getting underneath. Underlay and carpet inside. I've insulated my roof with that radiator foil backing stuff. I use an electric oil filled radiator with thermostat. It keeps the damp out.
I've just put a darts cabinet up in mine too, for the exercise of course!

Pot bellied stove in centre of room. Use double wall chimney, at least where it goes through roof. This keeps it cool and safe. If a reasonable ceiling height you could use some single wall for the lower section to radiate more heat.
As for wood, pine/larch is going to be cheapest, if you go for a hardwood cost will be bloody dear, as well using concrete block or sectional garage panels then. Might consider getting split pine/larch with bark still on.
As already said, concrete floor best.

Would love to brew my own but last few times I tried it didn't go so well.

I was thinking of leveling out the ground, then putting down a sand base, followed by breeze blocks with a 1/2 inch gap then filling the gaps with concrete (strong but also semi insulated).

Starting to think the Woodburner is going to up the costs a great deal as well as basically burn the place down.

I'm thinking around 9' x 9' with a small bar, 2 stools a chesterfield and pictures etc should be enough, may be able to push it to 12 x 10.

I have got a similar idea of a shed for when I get my own place. Also Yeti, I don't think you'll need guttering on if having a felt roof, I could be wrong though! If you do go ahead with putting a woodburner in check out evilbay. Got loads at the mo!

You know, I'm not so sure I like this! I would much prefer a designated smoking drinking venue at the bottom of my garden, with some great speakers and so crazy comfy seats and leave it at that, and then have a fire pit to gather everyone around and keep warm and cook marshmallows over!

Only problem with that is if it rains on an angle you will end up with a wet arse and a destroyed fire. No more marshmellows for you!
